They almost certainly won't discover a NPD in assessment. That is not to say it is or isn't there but I feel sure OP will be scripted to parrot whatever he feels his best fit defence is during assessment.
The defence team will not want anything else muddying the waters and he will have been spending the last few days learning about GAD and thinking up examples to demonstrate it.

I am not judging him if he does this. Perhaps I am by judging him by my own low standards.

Sympathies, BeCool. It trickles down my Father's family. I'm desperately trying to buck that trend, apparently by having a hundred other things wrong with my brain, and then tackling them with piles of (prescribed) drugs and loads of counselling.

The polished veneer goes with it too. People are genuinely baffled when they hear what goes on behind closed doors, because they'd never believe it of whoever in a million years. They're so sweet/lovely/helpful/generous. This is because the Narc has to sell the lie of how brilliant they are.

Often, it's not noticeable at all until something goes wrong, and it's the reaction to that that can highlight it, rather than the day to day actions of the person.

I'm am kind of NC with my Dad and we live in different countries - I can only really say he is N from what I have learned on MN. But it all totally makes sense now.

He has a very polished veneer!

I had one 'friend' with narcissistic traits. We're no longer in touch.

Oh dear BeCool.... Thanks

I have only really known one true narcissist and it wasn't a pleasant experience - it was my boss in a close work environment, thank goodness I don't work there any more

People with NPD lie regularly, are unable to accept responsibility for their actions, will cast themselves in the best light etc.
Yes this ^

Roussette that paragraph describes my father :(

This is interesting...
The most important point is that people who are either antisocial or narcissistic are victimizers.. Most likely, every reader of this column has unfortunately known a man or woman who is incredibly self-centered and self-aggrandizing, who is untruthful and cannot be trusted, who fails to see things from any point of view other than his own, and who is able to eliminate fear (and conscience) long enough to pursue any means to an end. Invariably, others are betrayed, deceived, and emotionally (perhaps financially) injured. The narcissist may not commit an act that is illegal, but the damage he does may be devastating. In fact, because the narcissist appears to be law-abiding, others may not be suspicious of him leaving him freer to pursue his objectives, no matter at whose expense. I have found that the main difference between the narcissist and antisocial individual, in most instances, is that the former has been shrewd or slick enough not to get caught for breaking the law.

Bearing in mind the final sentence, I just wonder if that's why OP is like he is in Court.

(massive apologies for upsetting anyone with this - I know it's all speculation)

"Yes I killer her M'Lady, but I'm a narc so I couldn't help myself & I am a victim in all this" - come on?

To be fair, add in the fact that guns go off in his hands, that does seem to be his defence now.

LookingThroughTheFog · 15/05/2014 11:15

But is NPD mitigation for what he did in any way at all?

To me this wouldn't be about mitigation; it would be about how his testimony might be received.

People with NPD lie regularly, are unable to accept responsibility for their actions, will cast themselves in the best light etc.

But again - this is just my opinion. I'm not a legal expert or a psychology expert.

"The defense must be very nervous of a Narcissistic Disorder being diagnosed?"

The psychiatric assessment could determine any one of the four Cluster B personality disorders: antisocial, borderline, narcissistic, and histrionic.

The DSM-IV views these as a subset of personality disorders that are characterized by dramatic, emotional or erratic behaviour.

Oh I'm not at expert - just my mere opinion :)

But really I can't see how diagnosis of NPD could possibly mitigate any criminal behavior - surely that would be a red light for N's to rage upon others as they feel befits them?

I see. Thank you. I couldn't get past if it is a mental health problem it would be taken into account.

Did Nell not say at one pint of the trail that everything is about OP? If that is the case, could that be a reason Nell pushed this? He believes he is narcissistic? Could the psychiatrist giving evidence given him a way to get that diagnosed? Or could he have requested the observation anyway?

Report
BeCool · 15/05/2014 10:41

I don't think it would have any mitigation on the verdict, and OP would be a confirmed narcissist - which would surely tear massive holes in their defense (I was trying to protect Reeva etc)?

Report
bobblewobble · 15/05/2014 10:24

Why will the defence be nervous of a Narcissistic Disorder being diagnosed? Will that not be taken in to account if it is something he cannot control?

The defense must be very nervous of a Narcissistic Disorder being diagnosed?

Watching the Sky round up last night I was struck how Nell was asking so many questions we have been asking on these threads since the very beginning - re all the security lapses - open balcony, ladders, alarm function etc not fitting in very well with someone who was so concerned with their security.

it was great to see those points being made.

It seems while Nell is a MN'er, Roux is yet to discover us.

It does seems way too much of an amateur mistake for the defense team to make bringing in that psych testimony - I can't help thinking it was a device used by them as surely they are way too experienced not to know
how it would open OP us to further psych analysis?

The OP trial is my dirty little secret! Occasionally when out with friends, the trial might come up and I really have to bite my tongue when others are talking about it and spouting rubbish because they haven't watched anything or followed it. Sometimes I say something and they might contradict it by saying 'no, actually that isn't right' and then i get shouted down and inside I think you are wrong and I am sure of my facts because I've watched the trial but I say nothing and just smile.

Plus I can't get links on iPad so no idea what the badges are.
