Ouchee, poor mum. I hope he doesn't end up with any problems- he seems to be doing really well despite a dodgy start.

I had a big baby - though titchy compared to this one. DS3 was 10lb10oz and had him with just gas and air. The first thing I thought when I heard this story was that this woman had been let down during her pg. I was measuring big from about 20 weeks -at least 4 weeks ahead. The community midwife didn't seem concerned at all and said it was probably fluid and just laughed each time I was measured. I didn't have many appointments because it was my 3rd. But my scans were showing a big baby and so were my measurements. It's just nothing was put in place to monitor the labour. I was uncomfortably huge and everyone was commenting on the size of my bump. I was also allowed to go two weeks over - even though I raised concerns a few times - and it was pretty awful SPD wise and looking after my other DCs.

Labour was much harder than with DD2 - contractions stopped and started and I was pushing without contractions for about 40 minutes... and getting the head out was very difficult - my midwife said "oh my god" in horror when the head came out and raised the issue on my behalf - she said that more should have been done during the pg to monitor growth more closely and that I shouldn't have been allowed to go 42+1.

He's amazing though. Big babies are just lovely. He's 3 months and in 9 month clothes.

I was told at my 20 week scan (last one i had) that DD was growing normally- if not slightly on the smaller side. I gave birth to a 10.5lbs baby. The problem with having your scans at this stage is that babies do most of their fattening up in the final weeks.
15lbs is a different story! But i do think there should be a later scan involved in all pregnancies for this reason.

Why wasn't she scanned? There are lots of problems that can be avoided or dealt with by regular scans as they are picked up immediately. As for those saying the scans aren't always accurate, most of the time they are very close, the newer scans are very accurate and a 15 and a half pound baby would have been picked up as dangerously large!!!

Lucky the baby was born alive, healthy and the poor mother not permanently disabled. That could have gone so wrong.

My three boys were all around 11lbs, largest one was 11lbs 6oz. I was tested repeatedly for gestational diabetes, and didn't have it. However ,none of mine were puffy like that when they were born (just huge!!), not that he isn't very cute indeed..... Just wonder why this wasn't picked up at the 20wk scan as he is clearly very long as well as big... I have every sympathy for his poor mother, I felt disabled during the last month or so of each pregnancy and did not enjoy that part of child bearing at all... For me, the birth was a relief each time....

He looks beautiful, seems healthy, well done to the little family!

My dad's family were around that size at birth - II've seen the newspaper articles calling my uncle the largest baby in the county. Granny didn't have a problem - head size was fairly average apparently.
Did mean I was a bit bemused at the modern obsession of keeping babies below 9lb before birth.

Was quite glad though when they kept telling me ds looked very average - ds and dd were spot on the national averages for their race and sex.

Eek. He looks lovely though, and ouch for his mum! And he has adorable hair.

I think that proves once and for it's presentation not size that determines how a baby needs to be born.

Wowza.

OMG I should not have read that at 30 weeks pg.

And I've been eating masses of sugar all pregnancy

eek!

He is lovely!

I remember during my section the surgeon saying we have got a decent big baby here. It is on video too. Even a scan to check for breech said big baby. I too was scared.

Ds was 6lb when born.

Muriel - Sorry, all I really meant was that newspapers like to take throwaway comments and make them into big things. So you can't rely too much on quotes in those types of articles. Not that she couldn't easily be traumatised.

He is a sweet looking dear little boy. Interesting shag what you say about sugar.

I do hope he is healthy and his poor mother is ok, she is only young. Must have been traumatic, bless her.

Tothreeornottothree, what makes you think it was said light heartedly? I should think that would be enough to put anyone off for a long time Smile

Scans only tend to pick up if babies are 'underweight' rather than on the large side, or that was the case 7 years ago anyway.

So glad the little boy is ok Smile

Just seen that she had an epidural.

Christ - getting a 15lb baby out with an epidural in place. Jesus. Give the girl a bloody medal.

She must feel like she's won prize pig at the fair. I know I did when I had my big baby.

"I think anyone with a shoulder distocia is going to have an episiotomy from here to kingdom come though"

I had a shoulder dystocia with an 11lb baby and didn't have an episiotomy. Or stitches for that matter. wizard's sleeve

I had gestational diabetes which was poorly controlled, partly as it was only picked up by chance, not from sugar in my urine (never had any). That baby looks like it's had too much sugar in the womb. DS was just like that - fat, fat, fat, and weirdly wiggy looking. (but cute too!)

The scans are so inaccurate though. They kept telling me that DS was going to be at least 10 pounds maybe 11 and I was blooming terrified. He was 7lb 10oz. I'm sure it works the other way too

Jesus christ. What a dear looking big boy but the poor, poor girl who gave birth.

Dont' they scan people and find out if babies are so big? Surely they must have had some idea? That poor girl must have been in agony afterwards.

I am glad that the baby is well but bloody hell.

I'm not looking! I'm grateful for the child I already have, this has really put me off having any more! Grin

Luckily there is a more gentle option before going in with all medical guns blazing. From the Spinning babies web site.
