I just bought a tumble dryer!

This feels like a proper adult purchase since I haven't had one since I left home. I am looking forward to:

Fluffy towels! The joy
Bedding washed, dried and back on the beds in a day
Baby clothes quick washed and then dried and ready to wear instead of spending ages on the line
NOTHING smelling of damp

My DH hated the dryer and refused to let his cloths go in it for a good 6 weeks as it "would wreck them". He only saw the light when his cloths were left wet in the basket as I couldn't find the time to hang them up. He is now a reformed man :)

The AAA energy rated cycle on my washer & dishwasher are both over 2 hours. They heat slowly for longer. Gives better washing results & uses far less energy.

Archedbrowse, quick wash uses MORE water than full cycles as it has to compensate for the time lost. It has more water to heat in a shorter space of time, meaning the heat element has to work harder using more electricity. The motor barely uses any electric at all, 90% of the energy use of a washing machine is the heat element.

And no, I would never wash baby clothes on quick wash. Quick wash skips a rinse and leaves way more detergent residue behind which is what causes itching and rashes.

Mine broke down about a year ago and I haven't replaced it because I can manage withou by using heated airer and banisters. I also felt guilty because they are supposed to be bad for the environment and a high fire risk. Having read this thread though I'm going to stop being a martyr with hard, rough towels. I'm going to get a new one asap, I've git space where the broken one is sitting. I'm all excited now!

I wanted one as I grew up with them.

When I used to babysit my mums god daughter they used to bring clothes that had been dried on the radiator and they were so stiff and rough. Made me determined to get a tumble dryer when I got my own place

When I moved here ten years ago, I definitely heard people poo poo the idea of a tumble dryer. Derided as "American." I'm surprised to see that this thread has been entirely positive about them.

When I moved here, I made it very clear that I was always going to have a tumble dryer. I don't care if it sits on a dresser in a bedroom to reach the window. I'm always having one. But I think my attitude was a bit strident. It's because I grew up in a place where living with damp underwear all over the house is simply unthinkable. And clothes lines are sometimes simply not allowed.

I know someone who emigrated here from a country where everyone uses tumble dryers. Her husband flatly refused to get one, saying his mum never had one and why should she have better than his own mum had.

My DH had never had one and was very resistant to the idea of a dishwasher before we got one. Now he agrees that it's the thing we'd replace before anything else if it broke down. They're also revolutionary.

Next in line is a dishwasher! I hate washing dishes by hand and DH loves it. He is very particular about the order things must be washed in too. I do think he's going to enjoy a dishwasher though. He's never had one!

We're moving house soon and I'm going to have room for one for the first time. I'm very excited about it : ) We have a washer-dryer at the moment but the drying cycle is pretty useless, I really only use it for piles of sicks and undies. I still have a full clothes horse hanging around most of the time.

OP, there's a whole world of grown-up stuff you're going to cringe to find yourself getting excited about. Get used to it : )

My tumble dryer tripped the electrics and smelled of burning last week - it's in the garage. I am now proud owner of new one delivered quick smart by lovely local electrical shop.

Couldn't live without it and I love a line of washing but it has rained practically day this month.

I would say one tumble dryer is worth ten dishwashers. I honestly prefer to wash dishes by hand, though.

My family chipped in for my 19th birthday and got me one, 4 people in a 2 bed flat and it was a miracle. Still loving it now. No dishwasher though

Even got a condenser tumble dryer so I could put it in the cupboard when we lived at the flat. Just cracked the door slightly to let the heat out but no worries about moisture

The washing machine and tumble dryer are now both in the outhouse at the house

They are amazing, I onmy use ours when the weather's no good for line drying but it's so much better than having washing hanging out in the house (we haven't got a spare room or dining room where we could put a clothes horse). The only things that don't go in it are dry clean items like suits and formal dresses.

Oh OP. Congratulations!

It will change your life. I even tumble dry certain non-tumble dryable items on the "cool" setting. Or even just finish line dried stuff in there for that final storable dryness. Shamaze.

I wash almost everything on quick wash. I prefer to put sheets and underpants on the long, hot cycle overnight but if I am trying to slay the laundry pile in a day, I will do the quick wash anyway.

Tumble dryers are awesome. We have a vented on in our conservatory, where the hose can go out a small window without freezing the whole house. Then there's a condenser in the kitchen. I don't care for it but my husband uses it because it's closer.

At my flat (not the family home) I have a washer dryer. I rarely use the drying cycle because it makes everything wrinkley. I will use airers. But I mostly wash sheets, towels and a bit of my own clothing.
