Applying for two child passports at the same time?

I’m a tad confused.

DS2 and DS1 need their first passports.

We took DS1 for his this morning. We opted for the post office digital check and send. They took a copy of mine and DH marriage certificate, his birth certificate and also asked for my passport to send off with the application. I gave it them of course, however have since realised it likely means I won’t be able to apply for a passport for DS2 until the supporting documents for DS1 are returned!

I did enquire at the post office and they told me it would be fine and they’d just make a note saying the reference number on DS1s application was using the same supporting documents for DS2s - however they weren’t confident and I’ve since read on mumsnet that often passports are processed at different offices therefore this wouldn’t matter.

Is there really no way to apply for two passports for two separate children at the same time? We wanted to go away in June but luckily haven’t booked anything yet as I can’t see it happening!

Sorry if I sound stupid, I’m just confused.

Any advice?

Thanks

@TwinMum1989

Honestly I’m thinking DH should be able to do it?? It makes no sense that he wouldn’t. I’d understand it more if we weren’t married but we are (however we weren’t at the time the children were born. Could this be why the post office told us no??)

Have you re registered their births since you got married?

I've definitely never known an an adult passport to have to be sent with the child's application. I think the person at the post office has misinformed you unfortunately.

Luckily I have a copy of my passport that the post office gave me, that has my passport number on it so I can pop that in when applying for DS2s online. This has all been so annoying! I wish we had never paid extra for the check and send now Sad

I honestly had no idea I wasn’t supposed to send my passport off - the post office told me I had to there and then (they sent it all for us) this is my first time applying for passports for my kids, they’re only 2 years old. The guy that did it for us seemed adamant that he NEEDED to send off my full passport and that no, my husbands was absolutely not acceptable for our DS2. I’m just going to apply for DS2s online tomorrow when he gets up (as advised here)

Agree, have never heard of sending off the parents passport with the application.

www.gov.uk/get-a-child-passport

The definition on parental responsibility is on there.

I did send my actual passport away. The post office told me I had to. I’m planning on changing it next month via the fast track service (I want my marital name on it)
I’m now very confusing over what the post office was advising/telling us. How bizarre!

I would have done them online as it is cheaper and faster. Parents' passports don't need to be sent as you put the passport numbers on the application

Why on earth did you send off your passport? You only need to provide the number.

My friend’s husband did their son’s first passport. Think they are talking bollocks. But can’t you do the second one as an online application and then you don’t have to send anything in at all?

I hope you didn't send your actual passport away as all you need to provide is your passport number.

Your dh could be the named person applying on the other passport application but would need your marriage certificate.

We did re register the children to include our marital status on their ‘new’ birth certificates after we got married, however

@TwinMum1989

Also to add - DH did enquire as to whether our second son could have DHs passport as a supporting document but he was told no. The passport office would only accept mine. Strange because we are married and he is their father. DS2 was at my parents house today hence didn’t come with us for his passport. We were taking him Monday but now I don’t know whether to bother or not

I really don’t think this is true. My husband applied for our DD’s as my passport was out of date. They never required anything from me. I’m sure it says that on the online application.

I’m not sure here. I did our 4 DC at the same time but did it online. I posted the four forms in the same envelope with supporting documents. I think you will need to wait but recently read times are 2-3 weeks for renewal, not sure about first passports. I’d give them a call on Monday, they must have had this before.

Surely you DH can do the other one? I think it’s just got to be someone with parental responsibility, not just the mother?
