Has anybody done a road trip down the east coast of the USA?

We are thinking of doing it. DH, me and ds (13).

DH wants to see New York and the Kennedy Space Centre and we considered getting a car and making it a bit of a road trip between the two. Well probably go next September for 3 weeks.

Has anyone done this? Any tips gratefully received.

@RusholmeRuffian thanks so much. Lots of interesting tips and sensible advice - especially about the prices of cars and flights might be better one way than the other!

We have done a few road trips around America before, but not that coast. I’m off to research your suggestions.

Thanks again.

We've done most of the East Coast on various road trips. Definitely research car hire costs as you may find the price varies massively depending on whether you fly into Florida or NY. Also be aware there is usually an extra fee for dropping the car at a different destination from where you pick it up and it's not always obvious when looking at comparison sites.

I absolutely love the space centre. Don't miss the shuttle simulator, it's brilliant!

Some of my favourite places along that route- St Augustine, Savannah, Charleston, the Outer Banks in North Carolina, Cape May NJ, Asbury Park NJ.

Once you have a rough idea, have a look at roadtrippers.com . You can put your route in and it will give you ideas of things to do along the way based on your interests. It will also give you an idea of fuel costs and driving times.

We use hotels.com to book hotels as you get a night free for every 10 you book.

I've got roadtrip envy!
