Romantic mini break suggestiond

Parents have v kindly offered to have our 3 yo for a couple of nights so we can go away for a big birthday in Sept. Can't believe my luck! Assuming we can get to kind of mini break destinations by then, where should we go and where should we stay? I'd be happy with UK too but also wondering if Madrid, Porto etc would be nice. Any lovely adult type places anyone knows? Tia

I stayed at the Portmerion Hotel for a short break last year.
Stayed in one of the Portmerion houses, not the hotel itself. Ate in the hotel which was expensive, but good quality.
Lovely walks along the river & in the woods
There is also a town a few miles away for shops & takeaway
Definitely recommend

I agree the UK is lovely for mini breaks but it’s just so expensive. I’ve been looking at three night dinner before and breakfast packages at hotels and the costs are coming in between £1,500 and £2000. The equivalent hotel abroad in many countries is half the price so it is very tempting to go if and when we are allowed.

Yes I have to say I agree with @Fixitup2 as the week goes on. UK is a safer bet and just as enjoyable for childfree time. Ludlow is also a nice option for child free time or York.

Seville is lovely for a break like that.

I wouldn’t risk abroad this year, too stressful with constantly changing guidelines. Lake District has some nice spa hotels, Chester is lovely and nice countryside, Northumberland, Wales. Or we rented a cottage in Nottinghamshire in the middle of nowhere and it was bliss!

Or if you prefer abroad I really recommend the New York Palace in Budapest. You get such a nicer hotel for your money than you would here and it’s beautiful

Not a hotel but we’ve stayed here a few times and it’s very luxurious and romantic. They do all sorts of experiences and food options. The first time we stayed we booked a massage therapist to give us both massages on arrival - www.bethnalandbec.com/

Main criteria is somewhere nice to wander round, good food to eat and a lovely hotel!

Favourite places for us are:

• walking in the Peak District. We talk lots and go to the pub.
  

-Bristol for nice food and pottering around the city.

• Malaga. I’ve not actually been there without DS but it had great potential with all the tapas and sherry bars and a lovely beach area.

Oh sorry just saw you'd also be happy with UK. Possibly this year that's where I'd stay - find something luxurious within a couple of hours of home and go there.

When they are that age, anywhere without Dc is romantic.
We found that if it's only for a couple of nights then you really want to minimise travel time, so I'd look at what flights work best around your dates and take it from there. Places that don't have a long transfer time from the airport are good - Budapest, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Amsterdam or Copenhagen would fit the bill.

Our two child free escapes so far have been Rome and Berlin, both very different but great in their own way.
