I did what people have said here - I found a cheap flight and then booked an air bnb.
We aren't in the UK but have booked return flights to Portugal for 500 pounds for 4 of us and I have booked an air bnb in Lisbon for 600 pounds. We are choosing to stay in Lisbon but you could easily get a train from Lisbon to somewhere with a beach and the public transport is really reasonable especially if you book in advance. Tickets are available 60 days before travel on the CP train website.
It can be done.
Look into flights to Faro too if you have that option.

We went to Gwynfryn farm in pwellhi a few years in a row. It’s a lovely dairy farm with just a few houses loads of outdoor space and beach within walking distance. They do have a pool in a barn and you can help milk the cows or feed the sheep if you want to but because only a few houses it’s never too busy.

The French Riviera is surprisingly cheap but also very beautiful. I prefer Nice itself to Cannes (but that’s just my opinion and Cannes is also nice!). I’ve done a quick price up for you - an AirBnB apartment in the old town area of Nice with 2 bedrooms would be from £650- 1200 - the one I’ve attached is £802 - www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/17411671?location=old%20nice%2C%20Nice%2C%20France&adults=2&children=2&check_in=2020-07-28&check_out=2020-08-04&source_impression_id=p3_1581878763_64HJMLixfaLKpb2e. I’m attaching flight details below for these dates. All in, comes in just over £1k.

Nice has had millions spent on it and is lovely! They’d are loads of restaurants and bars to eat out in if you’d prefer not to self cater or mix it up. There is a water park just off Place Messina which is great for kids and the beach at next door Villefranche is great for sea swimming for smaller people! Strolling down the Boulevard des Anglais at sunset is really nice and it’s a town with a lot to see on the art and culture front.
The tram line takes you quickly from the old town to the Station. As the PP has said, the Riviera is all linked up by this train line so day trips to Monaco,Cannes, Antibes, Menton etc are easy. You can even go into Italy for the day.
I’m attaching some pictures from one of our holidays there for you (Nice, Villefranche & Monaco) as well as flight details from Skyscanner.

Wherever you go, have a brilliant time!

As a previous poster said - work out cheap flights first and then book accommodation. Flights to Nice are pretty cheap - then Airbnb or self catering eg booking.com. We did a week in Cannes last year for about that much - there are lots of nice towns accessible by public transport. . Buses and trains v good along the Riviera. Lisbon also cheap to fly into, although the water is freezing along the Atlantic coast! Car hire always increases the cost hugely so we try to stick to public transport. One less child than you but we've never spent more than 1200 going abroad in August, and we haven't camped Grin

I did Corsica for a week at the end of the summer holidays a couple of years ago for just over £1k including car hire. Stayed in a chalet on a holiday park.

I’d look at where flights are cheapest and then look for an apartment to fit your budget. This year we have a house with pool in Majorca for 10 days for £1500 in the middle of August. I did book flights when they first came out though, they’ll be more now.

Try skyscanner's everywhere setting for dates in the summer holidays. I just found flights to Marseille to a total of £333.

On homeandaway there are some little apartments for under £600.

Check out skyscanner for car hire, there are some for just over £100 for a week.

Leaves you with just under £200 for spending money.

This one is £383! www.homeaway.co.uk/p1348579a?adultsCount=2&arrival=2020-08-01&childrenCount=2&departure=2020-08-08 It's kind of basic but you can find somewhere.

Unlikely in the normal UK school holidays I would think.

It depends what your accommodation needs would be? Are you OK with camping, self catering etc? How old are the DCs?

Turkey remains pretty affordable and there are definitely quieter parts.
