Where might I get the best advice, and a good deal?

we stayed in an amazing apartment booked through airbnb that looked out onto the Pantheon. 3 storeys up with 3 bedrooms. we have also stayed at piazza della madallena just round the corner. this is a brilliant location because you can easily walk through to the buses that go almost everywhere.

You've all been really helpful, thank you.
Well, I went into a Hays travel shop and asked about booking a Rome apartment through them, and they said that it's not something that they do: said that they only book hotel packages.
I had thought that in this competitive times, High Street agents would be more flexible on what they offer.
Even the girl in the shop said that she uses airbnb herself: she brought up their website and showed me all the Rome choices.
So it looks like that's the way to go: I'll take heed if all the advice I've received on here.

I use airbnb loads but if you're feeling 'old fashioned' and want advice and e.g. someone to meet you at the airport etc then a letting agency as recommended above seems a good way to go. Enjoy, rome is amazing!

Book your Vatican & Villa Borghese visits online (on their own websites not third party sites obviously!)

Airbnb & stick tightly in the city centre using the Pantheon as your centre point in search. Avoid the Termini area (main train station), even if it seems like great value. Stick within the triangle I have drawn on this map & it will be heavenly & everything will be an easy walk with no hills.

Jet2 do city breaks to Rome and you can book them in independent travel agents. You could also try Hayes travel, who have just taken over all the Thomas Cook shops.

Don't know how the price compares to doing it yourself online, but it's worth a try if that's what you want to do.

I wouldn't dismiss an independent TA.
I went to one last year with the sole intention of picking their brains then booking online.
They came up with a much better deal than I could find (this was an expensive trip), & they have a loyalty scheme so I've got cash towards the next holiday.
Also, if anything should go wrong you're fully protected - I'll spare you the horror story of AirBNB that happened to a friend.

We booked an apartment through this agency www.easyinrome.it/en/ . They will also arrange taxis to and from the airport.

We used a Rome letting agent. Stay in Rome. They were great and so was the apartment ( was up for sale last time I went otherwise I’d recommend it).
All booked online, offices in Rome and a good price.

Don’t forget to book Colosseum tickets online. Recommend the underground tour. You get access to unearth the stage but also the top levels which the general public don’t. Book through Coop culture the official site for best prices.

I prefer Homeaway to Air B&B. High St travel agents aren’t the best for apartments.

You're all right, I know.
Just me being very old- fashioned.
Will look at the sites you've suggested.

I'm amazed anyone uses high street travel agents for anything. I haven't in years! Even TripAdvisor has apartmenti.

You don’t need one. Just look at booking.com or Expedia or trivago and do it yourself.
