Girlie long weekend - any suggestions

angelpoppet · 20/07/2004 12:12

My girl friends and are are planning are annual "let the men look after the kids while we sod off somewhere" long weekend away.

We're planning to go away in February as baby's are due shortly after. We did Center Parcs this year and have not ruled out the idea of sampling another of the resorts but I also wondered if anyone had any suggestions of log cabins, holiday cottages etc etc

There will be between 6 and 8 of us if anyone has any ideas.
Thanking you in advance

Sorry meant to say we got out cottage from www.cottages4you.co.uk or you could try English cottages

me and my girlfriends did this a year ago. We hired a beautiful cottage in the middle of nowhere in Derbyshire. We didn't venture outside the cottage all weekend - although it was june so we could just sit in the garden and drink wine all day. You can't really do that in February though but you could all sit round a log fire. I wouldn't do Centre Parcs just cos it's so child-friendly it seems a shame to go somewhere full of kids when that's what you're escaping from!

If you do want to fly anywhere, better check how late in the pregnancy you can go. I went to Tenerife when 7 months preg and could only find one airline that was prepared to take me (Olympic). No one would insure me.

Sorry Delgirl, only just seen this. I've tried to do another link and failed miserably! Go into the ECC website - english-country-cottages.co.uk
and the property reference is FUB. That doesn't always work so if not type in a searh (at the top) South Devon for 10 people and 3 pages should appear. Tuckenhay is normally towards the end of the first page.

For our girlie weekend we're doing Lille. Only 2 nights (2 of the mums are 1st-timers), and around £135 for Eurostar and accom. Never done Lille before but it is European Capital of Culture this year.

The weekend starts with champagne and canapies on the train...

I would love to spend a week there Yorkiegirl. Only managed long weekends so far. It is so relaxing isn't it. You're right, the second pub is the best, worth the extra stroll down the lane!
The first pub was owned by Keith Floyd on our first visit down there (approx 8 years ago) and he charged us £10 for a cheese sandwich! Outrageous. Not surprisingly he had gone bust the following year.

I'm planning one for next year at a Warner hotel with the lasses. I've been a couple of times with DH. No kids allowed fab food and entertainment. We didn't even leave the hotel.

Ohh, weight loss! I daren't log on to that thread this afternoon angelpoppet .... not after
my pub lunch (lasagne, three slices of garlic bread and two white wine spritzers!). Not a good start! Hope you're doing much better.

Thanks Sandy balls - will have a look into that, it sounds beautifull. Also good luck with the weight loss (i'm hoping the moral support will be the cure!!!)

Channel Islands sound like a good idea Delgirl, I'll look into that, thanks

What about a country club hotel with spa? We (female group of friends) stayed at a Marriot one in Derbyshire a couple of years ago, look at their website www.marriot.co.uk or another good hotel website is www.johansens.com. You'll probably get a good rate for a February weekend stay (although not on valentines IYSWIM). HTH

Tuckenhay Mill House in South Devon (nr Totnes) is a lovely big converted paper mill - five bedrooms, sauna, swimming pool, huge kitchen.
I had my hen weekend there (10 of us) and it was great - it was also in February and there is a big open fire in the lounge (+ central heating of course). Two very nice pubs within walking distance, both serve great food. Booked through English Country Cottages and it cost approx £80 per person for three nights (Fri - Mon). The ECC website will give you a virtual tour (sorry, can't do links).

How about the Channel Islands or Northern France. I went to a lovely hotel near Deuville/Hon Fleur for my hen weekend. Really lovely and not too far to drive from Le Havre.

Lucky you! If I had the chance, I would go on a learn to sail weekend. I am on the mailing list of www.girlsforsail.org which runs RYA sailing courses from beginners right through to yacht races for women only groups. I think it would be really fun, but the possibility of co-ordinating 6 whole friends to be free at the same time, and them all getting on, is nil for me. Not sure whether it is suitable for February though!

we went to Longleat in May and have been looking at either Elevedon or Sherwood as an alternative.

I fancy a long weekend in Amsterdam, but not certain that it would be relaxing, but some good deals about.

If you stay in the EC you could look at Spain...not my cup of tea or there is always somewhere more exoctic, like Tunisia a trek into the sahara on a camel might not be what you had in mind though, What about the Centre Parc in the New Forest, Had a friend who went and raved about it, but not been myself.
