Book inscription - Welsh place name?

I have a book inscription which is almost totally readable apart from the place name written at the very top.

It's a Welsh name of a private school, the first word is the one that is a mystery. It's "something-Y-Fedw". Looks to me like Tdeol but that can't be right?

The rest says:

To Ingrid,
A reward for passing the Entrance Examination
E. M. Munroe

Wondered if anyone else had any ideas on what the place name might be?

Heol-y-Fedw Private School?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/08/2023 09:36

I thought Heol before I even saw the picture but yes it looks like Heol.

Even though the first letter looks like a T?

Just Googled. Heol-y-Fedw is near Port Talbot.

It means Birch Road

When the H has been written there's a 🙂loop on the second vertical that connects to the letter e, rather than the plain straight connecting horizontal middle bar we mostly use in modern handwriting. Sorry about the oddly placed smiley, it was supposed to be at the end but my phone is not behaving....

RoseslnTheHospital · 06/08/2023 09:47

I think I can see how the H could have been written like that, where the cross stroke has not connected with the first vertical of the H. Heol is what I would have thought if the first part of the H didn't look so similar to the capital T used further down!

I read that as idoel y fwdw

I know of an area called idoel

KnickerlessParsons · 06/08/2023 09:58

Helo

KnickerlessParsons · 06/08/2023 09:58

Heol!!!

(Autocorrect should learn to speak
Welsh!)

Autocorrect should learn to speakWelsh!

And then it will convert all your normal English "or"s to "o''r" and so on ... <voice of experience.

I'm with Heol-y-Fedw, too.

Heol is Welsh for street so that seems a good fit.
I would say it’s Heol Y Fedw.
