Oxford Uni - when are final results out?

KatieMorag · 09/06/2008 20:46

Does anyone know how I can find out when the final results are out? I have searched the net and come up with nothing.

I think they are not officially published but you can get hold of them online somewhere????

This is a zombie thread.

However, Oxford exam results are not published publicly anymore - this stopped in 2009.

The Oxford exam results are already known so I would suggest talking to your daughter.

Just seen your posts, KatieMorag, as I too was trawling the net to try to find out when DD's Oxford results will be posted. She too had to take a year out, and like you, we can't trust anything she says. All very complicated, and very very distressing. I know that she missed one exam entirely, but am hoping that she made it to the others, as she hasn't said otherwise. I'm terrified that she's failed completely, and am just hanging on in there, waiting to find out -- but I don't know when that will be. I have to assume that it will be soon as we've booked a graduation date of 18 July. Did you find out when results are notified?

That's fine. At least he stuck with it and got a degree. Better than a third and it's from Oxford.

2:2 from Oxford is good, y'know; better than other places. A friend of mine did a Masters with a 2:2 from Oxford. Well done him!

Just to update - he scraped a 2:2 (by two marks). of course we are disappointed but at least its a pass, even if its in the bottom 10% of the class

Essie3 - Thank you for your post. We do think that the college worked very hard to help him. He was referred to the student counselling service and the university medical service and had a great deal of support from his tutor and the chaplain.

KatieMorag just got on the board out of interest - because I'm a university lecturer - and yours is the only post I looked at because I was at Oxford!
Really sorry to hear about all the problems. It's not unusual (probably not helpful!) but sagitta is right, Oxford (and Cambridge) are very intense and I think more students have meltdowns there.

However, there should be (there certainly was when I was there) a few people looking out for students. All students have an advisor at college (separate to the subject) and decent tutors should be looking out for people with problems.
I, for one, and most of my colleagues, will speak to parents although it's not officially allowed, but it is a delicate area! I mean, yes they're officially adults but often they're just children...
So you could try to speak to his tutor again. If he refuses, do ask what the college has been doing to help your son, what interest they've been taking in him etc etc. And if it's not enough, make a formal complaint, because pastoral care is part of the job really. (And that's the college's role not the department's at Oxford).

I wonder which college he is at? They vary.

With graduation, although they have tried to change the system now, traditionally you might not graduate until a year or two after finishing your course at Oxford, due to lack of space and loads of students!

KatieMorag,

Just to let you know that the Law Finals results are now out. Tutors got the results earlier today and will probably have informed students by now. I've no info bar the public information but I hope that all works out well for you and him.

Thanks Xenia for that suggestion

DS came home this week and we asked about his results. He told us that he has witheld permission for his results to go on the faculty website and the notice boards so we are back to square one. Sigh

Thank you anyway to those of you who offered to do a reccy for us.

Once he tells us his result we will ask to see the email from his tutor and if he refuses we will write to the university asking for verification.

For the future there is a way parents could get personal data on a student. When you agree to support a child at university you could have an agreement with them (I had something in writing with mine but not dealing with personal information and data) by which you agree to support them financially in return for being given information and a right to access it directly from the college which you could then show to the college in due course. If he hasn't completed this year and is continuing next year and wants more money then you could get that written consent although I doubt that will work here as he seems so keen his parents know nothing which must be so hard for you.

I personally think even though students are adults some basic facts should be be given to their parents. They are kind of between childhood and adulthood anyway. (I have three at university stage one of whom got home today (not Oxbridge) and this week got the degree result she wanted). She is graduating next month but her older sister chose to do it 8 months after that in terms of the ceremony.

Cross posts Katie. I've no idea at all who it is, won't try to find out (very much doubt I'd be able to anyway, confidentiality is taken very seriously) and if I happen to hear a situation similar to this mentioned I will not comment. Hope that reassures you.

Yes, that should work. I would expect them to be there by the afternoon of the 10th at the latest. There'll be two lists, one for course II and one for course I (most people are course I so it'll have about 200 names on it). Katie says her ds is course I (I think) so make sure that you've got the right one. The names are alphabetical within class so check each class. Hope that's helpful.

Sorry not to do it myself but on reflection I don't think I should know the person's name in case it could even give a hint of breach of confidentiality (which it wouldn't be - it's pubic information and I wouldn't be able to get hold of anything that wasn't - but it might look like it was).

Thank you both

Catz - I appreciate the information you have given me. While DH and I both have post grad degrees, we did not attend collegiate universities and do not fully understand the system there.

I do recognise that we are in a sense invading his privacy but we feel that we do have a right to know this basic information. Or rather, seek to verify what we will be told.

Thank you for your assurance that you do not recognise him from my posts. I would not like to breach his confidentiality.

"I'm pretty sure that the target is actually the 9th even if the information being given out is the 10th but in any case it's sometimes a day out either way"

So Catz, it sounds as if I go down on 10th, that would be the best day? Katie, do feel free to CAT me nearer the time, with your son's name and the course he is doing, and I will pop down to Exam Schools to look.

Katie, Sorry I didn't mean to imply that you were trying to hassle the College or weren't recognising your son's privacy, I know absolutely nothing about the identity of the student or the specific situation and wouldn't want to comment on that. I just wanted to set out the general process/rules clearly. I think it's probably best if I stay away as Notquitegrownup has kindly promised to look. I don't think I could find out in advance whether he's elected to stay off the list anyway.

I hope all works out well.

thank you catz - we would only be looking for information that is in the public domain

we do understand the tutor/college's position and have not contacted them. Obviously they are well aware of DSs problems - goodness knows what he has told them! They probably think we don't care. From the little we have discovered, they have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help Ds. He has received a lot of support, from college and the university.

We know he is an adult but you will understand that we are supporting him to the tune of £10K a year, so we are stakeholders!

I believe that the student website isn't posting anymore as the faculty now put them on the intranet, so students who are out of Oxford can now access them online.

Bumping for someone more unconnected than Catz who would routinely pass Schools...

Katie - if you don't find anyone then let me know nearer the time - my DM is in Oxford quite often and I am sure she would do it but it might be a long and involved explanation! I am going there in a couple of weeks but that will be too early...

I could go and look for you, although it would be helpful if Catz could check whether his name is on the list or not, and CAT me. That way Catz doesn't have to get involved, and it really wouldn't take me too long. I'll be in Oxford on the 9th/10th
