Irish in Oxford?

Hi, just wondering if anyone from Rep of Ireland whose child did the Leaving Cert (we live in Dublin) can share how difficult (impossible?) it is to get an interview / offer for Oxford? My son is heading into his final year of secondary school this September and thinking of applying for entry 2023.
Maths is probably the degree he will go for ... but our LC is a bit like Scottish system, so to do well in Oxford MAT he would no doubt need extra tutoring as it is based on A-Levels.
Anyway, would love any feedback ... he is an all-rounder, with 90% plus results in all 7 subjects so far (Maths, Spanish, Irish, English, Physics, Chemistry, Classics) and secured an academic scholarship to a local private school when he was 12, which has saved us a fortune, bless him.
Not sure how well he would do at an interview, he is an introvert.

I am not in Ireland, but my dd has a friend who faced just this problem- he is an genuinely brilliant student but didn’t get an Oxford interview. He is now in Edinburgh and very happy there. He skipped the first year and went straight into the second. Has he been going to CTYI ?

No, I know friends whose children go there but he never fancied it, also a bit of a trek across town from us ... he spends most of his free time playing chess online but I wish he'd socialise a bit more. He will apply to other UK colleges, he likes the idea of being more independent and leaving home, but may well end up in Trinity, which would be fantastic I am sure, but he'd be stuck living at home

I know the maths course in Edinburgh is good. Dd’s friend says that he would have been better off applying to Cambridge, something to do with the timing of tests. He feels he would have been more likely to get in there anyway.
