I have an abcess and it's driving me crazy. I've never felt pain like it Sad
I went to the dentist on Friday who took an xray and prescribed antibiotics but I can't seem to control the pain. I've taken all the paracetamol & ibuprofen I'm allowed as I've been awake since 4am with the pain.
Any ideas what else I can take while I wait for the antibiotics to work? It's making me properly miserable Sad

He offered me diflofenic (sp) but it doesnt agree with me. I've taken codine and tramadol in the last few days but they don't touch it either.
Paracetamol is the only thing that takes the edge off which surprised him cause he thought ibuprofen would work better.
I'm just trying to tell myself that it's only 24hrs then he'll wip the bugger out. Going to try and get some sleep before I have to pick the DC at 1pm.

Could you not get in with a GP or your country's equivalent for stronger pain relief?

Even a telephone consultation should be ok I should think.

Ah good I was just about to say I had metronidazole and amoxicillin. I had the tooth out. Best thing ever. Hope that you get relief soon

MrsM mine definitely was honest not that polyop (sp) think. My dentist doesn't like dishing them out willy nilly either.

I didn't know dentists had issues with people asking for antibiotics I thought it was just GP's Grin

I don't get the hysteria over them, every lot I've been giving since having DD has given me thrush.

i've always found that anti-biotics (Metroxad sp) take a while to work few days. then heaven!

Knittedblanketholes - you poor thing Flowers it seems that it's your diet though that would cause your problems , not getting the right nutrients will have caused the deterioration, have you told your dentist about your eating disorder?

Thank you Mrsmorton. I've found your other thread and had a look. I think I might have an abcess as he did show me the xray and there was a big dark patch at the bottom of the root next to a long nerve that runs along the bottom jaw. I look like a hamster this morning so I'm going to drop the kids off to school and go and see what he advises.

My last dental pain I had to go back and get anti biotics three times, three times, nothing worked apart from drugs you can't buy legally, which didn't actually helping with the pain just put me to sleep. I'm almost crying remembering it.

Dental pain is the worst. I've had over thirty fillings in the past two years. Doesn't sound possible with the number of teeth I have (some have been removed) but they fill all viable sides.

Every time I visit the dentist I get accused of drinking pop or rating sugar but I have an eating disorder and live off ryvita and soup so it's just not true.

I actually live in fear of my next episode of dental pain. It's right in the bone, like in my cheek bones. But it's all my fault apparently. And all my baby teeth crumbled, were filled, and were taken out. Back when one sweet on a Saturday was the max of sweet things allowed.

I wish some dentist somewhere would look into why I suffer so much.

But yeah, anti biotics and the strongest painkillers available anywhere. Clove oil does seem to help a bit too.

Antibiotics don't work because it's not an infection. If you search for my other long long thread, it's explained in there.

Lying down makes it worse apparently. You need to sleep/not sleep propped up on pillows. With mine, it was the 5th (last) day of antibiotics before it worked. Oh god, the relief. I did paracetamol and ibuprofen alternately every two hours with a few hours gap in the night when I was sleeping/almost sleeping. I did do the clove oil on a cotton bud thing too. Not sure if the clove oil really worked but just pressing down with the cotton bud did afford some temporary relief.

Thank you, I'll drop the DC at school tomorrow and head straight to the dentist.
These antibiotics definetly aren't working then, it's been 72hrs and I'm in more pain now than I was on Friday.

Antibiotics would normally be effective within 48hrs. I would advise the OP to contact her General Dentist first thing in the morning, with a view to being seen tomorrow.

Bobby I think MrsM has gone for the night. Do you know if it's common for AB's in particular metronazone (sp) not to work?

My normal experience (granted limited) is that anti-bs kick in within 24/36 hours. It doesn't seem to be happening for the op.

Ivor
Dihydrocodeine isn't very effective for TA relief- this is why very few dentists prescribe it. We are much more likely to prescribe diclofenac and /or advise buying OTC co-codamol (8/500mg strength). Dentists aren't allowed to prescribe co-codamol.

Report
IvorHughJarrs · 08/01/2017 23:26

MrsMorton Is dihydrocodeine not on the dental formulary any more?

The PCT (as was) used to argue endlessly with dentists about this in our area a couple of years back. Dentists would tell patients they could not prescribe opiates and send them to pharmacists or GPs yet, according to the BNF, they could prescribe dihydrocodeine although none of them seemed to know it or want to do it. I always wondered why they didn't give 48 hours worth to tide people over the worst.

Another one here recommending clove oil, plus some relief from Sensodyne toothpaste rubbed on gum if available, otherwise neat whiskey (don't swallow) can help too.

Biofreeze roll-on (herbal) can sometimes help if applied to face (have tried most of first-aid kit in desparation).

I have mainly morphine prescription painkillers for other long-standing problem, so hesitate to add more medication.

Hope it improves soon

Everything's worse at night unfortunately I've got a cough been okish all day and now it's started up.

I'd do what MrsM said and try and get seen tomorrow, if they aren't working (which isn't definite) I think you'll need a different type asap.

Usual disclaimer I'm not a HCP or in any way qualified to give medical advice.

No drinking, both dentist & pharmacist stressed the no drinking. Wondering if it would knock me out though Wink
Why is it so much worse at night though, i slept for 2 hours earlier and I'm thinking that might be as good as it gets tonight.
