Does it hurt to have the Mirena coil removed?

And if so, how much? I was told (lied to) about the insertion, the doctor told me it would just be like a smear but with cramping - the hell it was! She had explained the whole proceedure to me and showed me all the bits and bobs, leaving out the part where she'd clamp my cervix and I'd yelp and nearly pass out.
I've asked about having it removed because my moods are all over the place, my skin is worse than it has ever been, I have a cyst on my left ovary which has caused bleeding and pains and I have absolutely no sex drive whatsoever - which kind of defeats the purpose of having one.

I was told they'd just tug on the threads and hey presto! Is this true or will I have to have my cervix clamped again?

Iv got my appointment tomorrow morning, went in last week and the nurse was unable to find the strings. I hope the GP finds it this time i just cant wait to have it taken out. Since having it in 3 years ago iv gone from size 12 to size 6/8 I know some would say its a good thing but at some point could hardly look at myself in the mirror for almost 6 months and just a small amount of stress I have to worst outbreak of acne and no meds seems to work. Its only from reading these comments iv realised the cause of my acne problem. Thanks alot ladies , I cant wait to have my flawless skin back and baby number 2 on the way. However I'm still dreading the whole experience of having it taken outConfusedSad

Ok I don't normally post things but as I was one of the people fanatically searching for answers like this one 'will it hurt having my marina coil taken out' I thought I'd let you know how it was for me YESTERDAY!
I went to have my old one (of 5yrs) removed and new one replaced & after reading LOTS of reviews I was DREADING it! Well, a very experienced nurse called my name & I explained that at my last smear test (2wks ago) my gp nurse couldn't find my cervix never mind my strings to my coil! After another visit she found my cervix but no sign of the strings so they wasn't even sure if it was still there (I knew it was otherwise I'd hv baby no.5 by now)!
When I was examined (yesterday) she said cervix was seen clearly but agreed couldn't see or feel strings!Confused but then pulled out these LONG gripper like tool!! Se inserted them (which didn't hurt) then just as I felt a small pinching-like feeling (and said ooo) she said "great now cough" as I coughed she pulled and out popped the coil!!!...pretty painless and I was totally relieved.
Then...came the inserting of the new one!Hmmthe nurse said she had to call another nurse in as you can go into 'cervical shock' (which I'd never heard of) anyway..this was slightly more uncomfortable as apparently your cervix closes up after any truma and removing the coil (to my cervix) was a truma! The measuring was a little uncomfortable as my cervix refused to open for some time but then..in it went! No problem at all!! I've had quite a bit of bleeding but today's not so bad. I've got no pain at all and only had nurrofen when I came home after the procedure. I would recommend the marina coil, my skin was fine & I've had less mood swings whilst with this & although some people don't have any periods I did through the whole 5yrs but they were so light for only 2 days & no horrible period pains whatsoever. I did however get cysts on my ovaries which dispersed on their own (and I may of got them anyway). So anyone thinking about getting one here is a positive post instead of all the negative ones!! Good luck girls!! OR easier choice...get partner to get a vascectomy!!!Grin

OMG, so relieved at reading all these messages from people with the same expereinces to me! I am having mine removed today and was checking what people said about the pain of that as putting it in was horrid!Hoping the taking out is not so bad. I too have had sever joint pains, especially in the lower back, and it also brought back my De Quervine syndrom in my hands which I thought I was shot off after having 2 kids and breatsfeeding. I also had insane mood swings to start with and no sex drive so I ma having it OUT! Come what may! Doctors need to properly survey the side effects of this coil, and precent women with the actual facts before persueding them to try it.

Hey,
I am 20 yo and I had my first mirena coil fitted about 2 months ago. Fitting was so painful I can't remember anything for about 2 hours after - just this aweful, overwhelming pain. Like cramps but a lot worse. It continued for about 6 weeks together with bleeding (not heavy but a bit more than just spotting). Today I woke up in utter pain in my lower stomach and decided to go to the clinic and get it checked out. The nurse said its better to take it out if it's not settling in properly and causes discomfort. She tried to pull it out but becuase there was so much blood she couldn't see the wires so she called a dr and he removed it for me. It was painful for about 2 seconds (tbh, it was more just uncomfortable than painful) and it was gone! The pains gone, the bleeding's gone! Decided to go on a pill instead; I guess my body wasn't having any of it. I'm so happy I got it removed! It's just my experience, I know a couple of friends who had it fitted and they have no problems. personally I wouldn't recommend getting a coil - I don't think the pain is worth it, but it all depends on each persons body I guess.

Summary - removal of a coil only hurts a little.

I had this coil fitted after having many problems
Periods that were irregular, I am so glad I had it done. (Had the marina coil) the hormones are released into the womb rather than other areas of the body. You can have it taken out and can start a family pretty much straight away. It hasn't affected my mood swings but it is different for everyone. I had the injection and pill but it didn't agree with me. Depends on the person and their cycle

So bizarre to read stories of weight gain, acne, sore boobs, pmt etc. My coil had the exact opposite effect and I lost weight and felt loads better. Unfortunately I booked an appt in June to have a smear, removal and re-insertion, but after the smear and removal, the re-insertion was too much. Dr apparently got it half way there but I was almost on the ceiling!! Haven't yet plucked up the courage to go back and try again so suffering long heavy periods, sore boobs, bad moods and bloating 😩

I think I was lucky.....mine didn't hurt at all on insertion (and I've had two c sections so no dilation). And removal was painless. I did bleed for England a few days after though.

I have had a myrena coil for 2 months and I have to say that it has been the worst time of my life. Bleeding was the reason for having it inserted as I suffer from heavy periods. Bleeding wise it has been a miracle, none at all. BUT awful thoughts, even suicidal ones! Depression, anxiaty, nervoussness, panic attacks, every day, all day. I even went to A&E last week because of it. You can think I am mental, but the coil was driving me insane! Guess what? The doctor at the hospital told me that is very common to have these secondary effects!!! Please don't wait to have it removed if you feel low. Better to be weak or aneamic than Depressed! And last tip: the nurse didn't want to remove it asshe said it was not a good reason!!! Even if thedictor said so. At the end sherecognised me that it is because it costs NHS 300£. Excuse me dear nurse, my life is more valuable than that! And secondly I pay my taxes. Shame on this nurse! Amazing that she is a woman!
I will NEVER again be under a hormonal treatment.

Blasted Mirenas. Easy as pie removal (unlike the fitting which was as bad as labour.... just take an ibuprofen before he appointment my eye... 😡).

Just thought I'd add my experience, I had mine out yesterday. It didn't hurt at all! Had a few period pain twinges last night but nothing major, no bleeding at all either. I'd had it in for 5 years and the insertion wasn't painful at all either. I think it's important to show that not everyone finds it painful or suffers from side effects, maybe I'm just lucky but I'd never had any problems with it. My main concern now is how quickly my periods return (if at all), but I'll just have to be patient about that I suppose!...

I know this is an old thread, but I had my Mirena coil removed this morning and was reading through this last night to see what was in store. Having it fitted was painful (we've not had children yet) so I was dreading having it removed. However, I shouldn't have worried. Once the speculum was in, the nurse said 'take a deep breath' and by the time I'd breathed out (about 3 seconds), it was done. No pain at all. I took a couple of ibuprofen before hand just in case, but it wouldn't have been necessary.
A friend of mine had difficulty as the strings weren't visible, but my experience was fine. I will let you know if I end up a moody cow in the next few days!
I had no issues with the coil while it was in either. I had it in for 4.5 years, had it checked twice and apart from that, would never have known it was there.

OK, it is not painless but it is tolerable.
I have just had my second mirena coil removed. No side effects, no weight gain or nothing.
Both times on removal the threads have been caught in the coil making it difficult to detect but yes they use a speculum and they hold it in place - its not comfortable but it can be tolerated.
If they cant detect the coil with the threads, they will use forceps and you will feel it coming out and two tugs and its out. Not painless but can do it. I'd recommend it as a form of contraception, it lasts for years.

I had mine replaced under general anaesthetic. It did not hurt nearly as much as when I had it done (twice) previously.

Had mine removed and replaced a couple of weeks ago. Uncomfortable but not unbearable. If it's done by an experienced GP it's pretty quick. My GP uses anaesthetic gel on cervix rather than anaesthetic injection they used to use as they find it is less likely to cause the cervix to spasm. The removal took seconds.
It's my 4th Mirena and probably the last, I have them to reduce endometriosis symptoms and have had a replacement every 4 yrs. I get too any endo symptoms if left longer. Of the 4 insertions the second was the worst as my cervix had tipped and GP struggled to insert the coil. I take 600mg of Ibuprofen about half an hour before the procedure which helps reduce the cramping after insertion.

I am 44, have the Merina coil thingy, it is due to be removed. I have been twice now, as it moved to inside my uterus more.
Reason I had it was due to the hormones helping my REALLY bad PMT and also as a prevention.[ Although being my age and also diabetic {insulin controlled} since 99 it seems pretty hard to get pregnant i think]
Also my uterus is pushed further back that normal womens. So much my luck!!

Now I have a referral being done to send me to the Liverpools Womens. I just hope they can knock me out with something, as the pain is like no other. So hard to describe to someone in the dark.
I am home drinking tea and feeling meh still , that was without any removal or replacement.
If they used that method as an interrogation I would fail so badly. Cried and shouted out when she shoved god knows inside me with a clamp in place.

I’ve had the Mirena could since it was fitted in February (appt was Valentine’s Day - how romantic Confused) and I’ve noticed weight gain (from increased appetite) and also an increase in headaches and migraines - has anyone else noticed this?

Hi, I had my Mirena removed and replaced after 5 years, last week. The removal didn't really hurt, the new one inserted did hurt but it only lasted about 30 seconds. After standing I felt a little shaky, but it soon passed. I was in pain for about two hours after which felt like bad period cramps. A week later I still have mild, random cramps, but not enough to take pain relief.
I have to say, I am more hungrier, which might explain weight gain issues linked to this. I've been more tired and tender breasts. But, for me the negatives out weigh the awful heavy periods I was having prior to mirena, which stopped after having mirena fitted, hope this helps 🙂

So I came across this and thought I'd share my story. So had a marena coil fitted in Feb 2014 was absolutely fine, no pain, no spotting, no bleeding etc it had been a god send. So today I went to get it removed and a new one put in place..well what a different story it was this time. The doctor had told me to expect some contractions when I got it removed but because it hadn't hurt the first time and I'd given birth to an 8lb baby with no pain relief not even gas and sir I thought you know what I've got this .well how wrong was I. She removed it and it was agony I did contract and felt like stabbing pain just above my pubic bone. She then inserted the new one and my god I near shot off the bed. My stomach and my vagina were both in pain. My vagina felt almost stingy it felt the same as when my placenta was delivered. I'm not trying to scare anyone but I didn't prepare myself cause so many people told me it didn't hurt having one removed
