Palpitations!

mineofuselessinformation · 22/10/2013 20:05

I hope someone can give me some advice...... Since about 12 noon today I've been having palpitations. I do get them occasionally but usually they last a few seconds then go. My heart rate isn't particularly fast. Do I need to do anything?
I have been very stressed recently.....
Thanks.

So... My thyroid (tsh) test was normal.
A referral for a 24 hr ECG has miraculously appeared for the 4th December.
The saga continues!

Go back to gp&ask for referral for24hr ecg
whats the difference between tsh&t3 t4?
They just told me over the phone all was normal.didnt mention ts anything!

I've had:
Quick ECG in A&E
Heart monitor in A&E
Bloods in A&E (don't know what though).
Then gp insisted on thyroid test, but only did tsh, not t3 or t4
Also had quick ECG in gp surgery.
I have no idea what's going to happen now......

Palpitations can be a sign of magnesium deficiency. Google other signs and symptoms to see if it could be this. I use magnesium oil and the palpitations I was getting have now stopped

Thanks Jbck. Palpitations are much less now, thankfully (I was actually frightened which is unusual for me, can cope with my asthma getting bad etc), but I am wondering whether it's all tied in with my thyroid.
I normally take a b vitamin complex, and notice the difference when I don't..... I've been incredibly tired for the last two years really, with dry skin and lately my hair is falling out badly.
It would be good if I could get some answers soon.
I'm just so frustrated that it's a good time since I went to A&E, no 24 hr EEG in sight and can't help wondering if it's all a funding thing.

OP hang in there, not knowing is sometimes harder than a dx, I know thats not always true but hopefully once you find out whats causing them, there will be a treatment or way of coping.

Just resurrecting this to say I saw a gp on the 28th who said until she knew if I had thyroid tests done, she didn't want to do anything. I was then contacted by the surgery on the 31st asking me to make an appointment for thyroid tests and an EEG, which I went to today...
The saga continues as my notes say the tests and EEG are for a referral, which I didn't know, so there is no 24hr test in the offing for some time yet.

I've been having the ectopic beats frequently for 2 years now but kind of learned to live withthem, I was told beta blockers didn't always make any difference to ectopics and as the palpitations I also had were much less frequent I didn't bother as they had horrible side effects when I needed them years ago when I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.

I've had ecg, 24 and 72 hour monitoring, 2 heart scans but everything is normal. Thyroid levels checked every 3 then 6 months when I had been on annual checks for years.

They are very disconcerting, I have them several times an hour and they tend to do a little run quite often, maybe 4 or 5 in a row so I sympathise.

Panic makes them worse so I try and stay calm and still if they are bad or carry on regardless so they are less noticeable when I'm going about my daily business.

Recently I realised they've been a lot less frequent, still have at least one epside a day but compared to several every hour , even waking me sometimes I can cope better with it just now.

I find a similar thing as suggested above helps but I sort of do like Im trying to burp and it can help, not always but worth a go.

I was told they were a normal abnormality and everyone has them at some point, like when people say 'my heart skipped a beat' thats most likely an odd ectopic.

Fingers crossed you get everything checked out and there's no underlying cause.

Do others find beta blockers do make a difference to the ectopics themselves? Once I knew what each thing was it was easy to distinguish between an actual run of palpitations and these.

Excuse me hogging your thread with my massive post Smile

Framey, I've tried the nose thing and it doesn't help.
Kernow, this is a bit more than a few here and there. The nurse counted ten in 60 seconds at A&E. (I managed 23 'alarms' in a row on the heart monitor too.)
I know it's probably nothing, but it's now day 5 and counting, and they're still going now and again, which is highly annoying. I'd rather they had a pattern than this.

Are you getting any chest pain/pressure with them op?
Im getting these too but with chest pain/pressure&have gotta go back to gp for an ecg&blood tests for thyroid, electrolites etc
If ecg shows nowt have to have a24hr one done
My gp saidnot to ignore chest pain&if i get it again to go straight to a&e!

I usually get palpitations either when I'm ovulating or when I'm due on - ie it's hormonal. Could this be the case with you OP? They are annoying and I feel a bit breathless for a few seconds but am then fine. Doc said nothing to worry about as am otherwise fit and healthy.

try the nose pinching ear popping thing?
A doctor taught me that trick when my ectopic beats were really annoying me.
I hardly get them nowadays but if \I do, that ear popping pressure thing sorts it.

I know that they're probably harmless and very likely due to the fact that I have been under a lot of stress lately (but never had it like this before, even on the day of a very nasty court hearing to settle divorce finances?).
But, they just feel so horrible and do make me feel short of breath at times. And of course, the more they go on, the more bothered about it I feel.
I got the youngest to feel my throat earlier tonight, and she could feel it in my pulse too!
I just want it all to bugger off (and suspect I wouldn't be offered beta blockers as my heart rate is usually quite low, as is my blood pressure). Confused

I've had these for years and take a beta blocker. Had an echo and wore a monitor..usually they are harmless. My doc and cardiologist were not concerned at all. The beta blocker is only because I hate feeling them not because it's medically necessary. They feel awful I know but will probably disappear one day in their own. I try to think of them as hiccups!

Another mner had ectopics and she had an echocardiogram and an MRI with enhancement. She had no murmur, but was given beta blockers which helped. They nothing seriously wrong.
A&E always send a report to your GP, but can be a few weeks before he/she gets it.

So.... I went to A&E last evening as I was still getting palpitations. Nurse could feel them when taking my pulse (missed beats - ectopic?). Heart monitor done - nothing 'significant' showed up, bloods taken - normal. Sent home.
I need to see a gp to organise a 24/48 hr monitoring, but of course can't get an appointment.

I just mentioned it because I was diagnosed with a heart murmur 5 years ago which is caused by the aortic valve not closing properly. It has been deteriorating eversince and shall soon need a replacement valve.
I do not get palpitations but did 40 years ago when my Thyroid overacted but usually they happened at night in bed.
Good luck with your breast screening.

I got up this morning.... Nothing. At work they started up again. Hmm
I've got a full-on day tomorrow (shouldn't even be working a full day plus extra time but that's another story) so I'm leaving it for now.
I have a breast screening appointment for Friday, so if they're going then, I shall go into A&E after.
Digerd, I did have the murmur checked (ultrasound and ecg) but it was nearly 20 years ago. No palpitations at the time, so it was never brought into the equation.
This is a terrible time for this to be going on, but that's probably why it's happening!

Have you had an echocardiogram to determine the cause of your heart murmur? Are you having regularcheck-ups?
