Mirena coil - anyone got anything good to say bout it?

My gynaecologist has recommended that I have the mirena coil, to help combat severe PMT which is getting worse, and makes me a horrid cow. I'm happy to give it a try, but have read nothing good about it on here - all the posts I can find refer to horrendous weight gain (really don't need that, thanks,) and PMT (?!). Has anyone had a good experience of it? The (lady gynaecologist reckons it's the best thing to happen in the field of gynaecology!

So. Please please please somebody help me... I'm scared to death if the weight gain and the lowered sex drive? Please if anyone has a positive experience help me a and quick! Lol. Had it put in today, and the experience so far has been rather disturbing x

I have had two, for several years each time and I was really pleased with them. Periods stopped after a couple of months and that was that, never thought about them again.

I second Sticklebug's advice about making sure the doc knows what they're doing! My first was inserted with no problem, and hardly any pain afterwards, but my second - she took ages to get it in and , yes, it was extremely painful. I then had really bad cramps for a couple of days. It was definitely worth it though. I had no problem having either removed.

I have had one for 9 years now (well3 actually) and it is brilliant. I have always suffered from extremely heavy periods (could not leave the house for one day a month as I soaked through strongest pad within an hour) and awful PMT.

I now have no bleeding at all (some monthly spotting for the first few months) and am just v slightly grumpy once a month.

No weight gain and my skin is completely clear with no monthly outbreaks of greasiness.

However, do make sure it is fitted by someone who does a lot. I had to have my 2nd one removed in hospital as the dr did not get it in right - turns out that I have a reteroverted uterus and now they know that it is easy for the gynaecologist to get in right.

Just bumping this in the hope that the OP or any with recent experience of the Mirena coil might be around. I've been advised that the Mirena or copper coil might be the best option for me contraception wise, having just had a nightmare with the depo jab.

Any recent experiences would be great, as I'm booked in to have a coil fitted later this month (need to decide which type of coil) and am wavering a bit having read the horror stories about pain in insertion and accidental pregnancies :(

The mirena helped with my original problem of heavy bleeding and pain. But now I have irregular lengthy periods of a 'normal' flow. Cysts, fibroids, weight gain and hormone imbalance. I'm thinking of having it removed.

Love mine, no bleeding at all as soon as it was fitted, no pmt, clear skin, not tired, best thing I ever did. Am 4 years in to this one and will be having another fitted straight away!!!!

hi i had my coil fitted last fri whilst on my 2 day of period the thing is im still getting pains and still losing bright red blood is this normal? if so how long will or should it last for? thanx

I am about to go have my second put in. I had my first recommended for endometriosis help, plus had a few other gynae issues, and it worked. The first 6mths I admit I hated it and wanted it out, but since then I had very light periods and all seemed pretty good.

had it out last october (under GA....the same way it was put in in fact) as I had to have a gynae op and it had been in for nearly 6yrs by that point, and was hoping that any endo and fibroid and cyst problems would have decided to go away thru so long not being a problem.

I have therefore decided I need it back before I get to needing yet more operations. was supposed to be tomorrow but it has been cancelled (the family planning woman due to fit it is ill) so need to re-book, and quite frankly, I cant wait!

Only side effects were a little weight gain, altho could be explained by a love of wine, and now it is currently gone I have less headaches so I think that was also a side effect.....but headache versus hideous period pain and mid cycle pain....I cope with the headaches better.

Love mine too, had it 4 years, no pain or discomfort on fitting, lots of erratic bleeding for first few months then virtually nothing, just occasional spotting. No weight gain, no side effects at all.

I got mine done at the FP clinic as they do them all the time there, whereas GPs probably don't have as much experience.

Fitting wasn't great - But its been good since. After settling in few months, no real periods and no PMT. Weight gain - well was losing at a decent rate before, and that stopped - but now gradually losing again. Significantly better than the really heavy periods that had me getting up two or three times a night and required mooncup emptying every 90mins on a bad day.

I had my coil put in on Thursday.....was very painful! Pain lasted all day. Friday was a good comfy day, sat was niggled with pain..... Sunday i felt like i was in labour again. Went to see my GP on Monday.....looked for the wires and couldn't see them. She sent me to hospital for a scan......that couldn't find it in my womb..........had x ray and it had ruptured my womb and travelled in to my pelvic cavity and was rubbing on my intestines! Was put on emergency list to have it removed...........and damage repaired..........was so lucky it didn't cause more damage

PLEASE IF YOU SEE THIS THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU HAVE IT FITTED.....WISH I NEVER HAD IT DONE..

Again, thanks for the feedback. I am due to have it fitted next week, but have decided to delay it until after our camping holiday in Italy - don't want to risk reaction/weird spotting etc while on holiday. Think it's worth waiting another month and being able to relax round the pool!

I have two close friends who both described it as a "miracle cure" for their heavy, painful periods and so when I was diagnosed with mild anaemia due to my increasingly unmanageably heavy periods, I was keen to try it out, despite my reservations about hormonal contraceptives.

I had it fitted at the beginning of February (more painful than I anticipated) and for three months spotted every single day, not just a tinted discharge but often specked with pieces of yucky brown skin tissue and sometime real blood.

Almost five months in, I?ve still not had a heavy period and am now getting about 1 week in four off from the spotting, but the other three weeks it?s still there and not showing much sign of getting lighter. Am also suffering abdominal and back pain every day, at times niggly but at times really quite unpleasant. No weight gain or spots, but I do feel bloated in the tummy and my face has become hairier too.

I was at my wits end with the heavy periods and yes, it has dealt with them in so far as the discharge is much lighter. But it?s also dealt with my need for contraceptives as there are very few windows in the month for having sex. And I really don?t feel great on it ? I?ve had a lot of joint pain which some internet posters say could be a symptom. I?m going to leave it for another couple of months and then probably ask to have it removed, unless it has ?settled down? by then, as Dr says it still might. I?m not hopeful any more.

I think the conclusion if that it works for some but not others ? the only thing you can do it try it and see how you get on.

Loony, I have heard conflicting things about Mirena and spots. Some say that it makes skin worse, and others say that if you already have bad skin it can improve it. I think that it takes about three months for the hormones to settle down. I also have terrible skin, and am wavering about it.

I love mine; have had it 6 yrs and am getting it replaced by the GP on Monday. Almost no periods at all - occasional spotting which doesn't even really need a panty liner. No spots, deffo no weight gain, no PMT, no more monthly cramps. Fitting it was a breeze - not even nervous about Mon

Really pleased with mine too - forget its there & just a bit of spotting every month. Can't comment on greasy hair or spots, other than to say I don't get them (within reason obviously!). I have also lost all the baby weight (over 3 stone) whilst being on it, so no weight gain here either.

I've had mine for coming up 4 years now and still really pleased with it, I had heavy periods and bad PMT, I had must admit I did have spotting for the first 8 months and always had to wear a pant liner, but that dissapeared over night. I now have no periods, and no PMT, I don't remember any weight gain.. go for it, but give yourself time to get used to it...
