We think my mums Gt Uncle is buried there. He died in a military hospital on 6th June 1944, in Ely. My grandad(his brother) always told my mum it was Nunhead he was buried in
I have written to - Camberwell I think- council and they are going to check their records to see if he is indeed buried there.
Was thinking of taking mum into London to have a look if the do indeed find his grave, but is it really big?
Are we likely to find it easily?

it's quite big - but really amazing and lovely to walk around. Not as big as highgate. Lots of very old tombs with the headstones fallen over and the writing worn down. But given the date your mums g uncle shouldn't be in one of those

You mean he shouldn't be in Nunhead?

My grandad was away fighting when his borther was killed,a dn when grandad came back, his mum and dad had been moved (for the 4th time) due to being bombed.
He asked them where he was buried and they said (he thought) Nunhead. His cousin told my mum it was somewhere beginning with "Nun"

no no no - I meant he should be in a grave with a headstone that can be read - sorry

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant.
If we had the location of the grave - assuming he is buried there - would it be relativley easy to find

yes i would think so, it's not hugely vast, but is a bit rambling in places. Good luck

When I found a family grave in an enormous cemetary in Plymouth a couple of years ago, the office actually gave me a little map with an X marks the spot and were incredibly helpful. I don't think they'd just leave you to find it on your own.

You could try the friends of Nunhead Cemetery for help locating the grave if its there?

Its a very big cemetary - my grandad is buried there but I couldn't find his grave as it's very overgrown (this was a while ago) but I think it's been improved.

There's some very interesting gravestones and famous people buried there.

My gran used to live on one side of nunhead cemetry in a bungalow - people often climbed over her flat roof to get out of the cemetry once they had got lost - it is hugh and easy to get lost and not able to find your way out........

Nunhead cemetery is lovely - really atmospheric and tumbledown. As regularlyoverwhelmed says, he'll probably be in the newer, more manicured bit though. It can be quite spooky in the right weather too.
