ok so I tinker about in the kitchen muffins etc but nothing major.

I want to make a 'proper' cake, Victoria Sponge I'm thinking as first attempt

Is it fool proof? anybody got any useful hints & tips?

what should I do/not do?

I use the lakeland plastic liners and metal tins

here

I am quite lazy.

i've got cheap silicon and cheap metal. prefer the silicon for sheer laziness. there's nothing in it, in terms of the cake itself.

DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN UNTIL YOU CAN SMELL THE CAKE!!

That's the best advice I was ever given and I pass it to you freely (takes a bow).
