DS hates lentils and mashed potatoes. What else can I do with a stew?

I would drop some gnocchi in, buy really made in any supermarkets. Any you don’t use in can be frozen, and they also freeze cooked OK as part of any surplus stew. I think they are a store cup stable.

I was going to say pie.
I tend to cook the pastry seperatly in the oven, and heat the stew on the hob. Then put stew on the plate, and 'top' with the pastry.

If there are enough juices I just add the lid. If not, I make up some instant gravy, mix all together once gravy is cool, then add lid. If you don’t let the gravy cool before you add to the rest, you get a soggy lid

do i need to add any more stock or anything before putting the stew under a pastry lid? Or just that and whack it in oven?

I do this all the time with this sort of thing. Just top with store bought puff pastry.

So the stew was nice; DS 'sort of liked it.' He loved the yorkshires!

I want to turn the leftovers into a pie - basically stick a flaky pastry lid on top.

Will that ruin the meat? I'll have to reheat the meat anyway.

Definitely dumplings or Yorkshire pudding.

A blatant derail but my DS loved Yorkshire puds. Also couldn't take buttered bread (texture). He went though the primary years with packed lunches in a flask: all time favourite was tub of cold Yorkshires with a flask of hot stew to pour over. I batch cooked so probably easier than sandwiches!

I've never made dumplings. Easy?

Yes. The trick is to put the lid on and leave them be to steam. Don't peek a look to see if they are done.
Left alone = light and fluffy. Peek a look = solid and lumpy

The recipe is on the back of the atora (the suet) packet.

Very easy. Suet, flour and water basically. You can add different herbs for flavour but I like them nice and basic.

Wow! Some great suggestions! I think he'd love Yorkshire puddings.

Dumplings and tiger bread. And if there's potatoes in that there stew (and there better be potatoes!) you get to hit the triple carb siren!
