I've ordered a breadmaker - arriving on Monday. What ingredients do I need to stick on my shopping list so I can use it?

I'll start with a simple white loaf and some pizza dough, probably.

(Aware this is a really thick question. Sorry Blush).

My used copy would fall open at the foccacia page and the banana bread one :)

Thanks, Soup. Just ordered that book - £2.16 used! :)

this is the book I have. It's just a paperback book sized one but has lots in it. I got mine from the Book People ages ago.

I'm not sure all breadmakers make jam.

I've never put milk powder in mine. Lasting longer is never a problem as the bread is gone in a day (the loaves are not huge)

I don't put the sugar in either.

There is no difference in the loaves :)

I have a selection of assorted bread flours and tend to have a mix of half white and the other half made up with a mix of different wholemeal flours and rye.

I have a great book called "Fresh Bread in the Morning" which has a wonderful selection of recipes in it - a favourite is banana bread which is proper bread with bananas in it. Makes wonderful toast as it goes slightly chewy and great for using up over ripe bananas!

Some machine recipes include dried milk powder, my Panasonic does. It's not essential, but it seems to give it a softer crust, and the bread stays fresher for longer

Really? You can make jam in it? Wow....didn't know that.

Added all your suggestions to my online shop list. Thanks.

Apples and cinnamon for a good breakfast bread. Try Rye flour, I add a little to white and wholemeal for a sour flavour - nicer than it sounds.

You might want to add sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, pumpkin seeds, oatbran, spelt flour, and granary, wholemeal flour to the list. Don't forget to treat yourself to a nice recipe book. I had to buy a measuring jug and a set of measuring spoons.

I use mine all the time too. It makes all sorts of artisan bread and has saved me a fortune. It's good for pizza dough and making a small quantity of jam (about 2 x one-pound jars).

Happy baking.

No, it makes total sense. They're brilliant.
I use mine all the time - sometimes I make the dough in the machine and bake it in the oven, sometimes I do a standard loaf in the machine overnight, but I never buy bread.
I've had my Panasonic since 2005 and it's still going strong, have used it most days.

Thanks, Tunip.

Is it sad that I'm really excited?

strong white flour
dried yeast of a sort suitable for breadmakers (they say on the pack)
salt
oil/butter
sugar

TBH you probably have everything except for the flour and yeast!
You might as well get some wholewheat strong flour too.
