And Paul is the daddy Grin

Breeder trap ready, am on constant watch to get her in on time but not too early so she can safely pop her babies and they can hide from her and the others.

WTF am I going to do with 20 odd platies?

Eeek! Within an hour?!

It's better to be on the safe side, nowittyname, so I am sure you will know when the time is right to release them.

Just got an extra filter to make sure the extra bioload can be dealt with for a bit longer.

My Lord! Within an hour!!!! Think my head was still over the side of the bed throwing up! Oh so pleased not to be a fish or guinea pig!

To be honest last mini things weren't full on gobbled, they just had their tails nipped to the point that they couldn't swim and had to be euthanised. However, I have since upped the number of tiger barbs to 6 so hopefully they will be less up for nipping!

Hope mum and babes are doing well. x

Yes, once they are big enough to not get eaten then they'll be fine. Danios are speedy anyway so should be able to get away.

Can't believe Polly is a mum again. I read on the BBC site yesterday that guinea pigs can get pregnant within an hour of giving birth. An hour! I was still being stitched up, I would have attacked DH if he'd come near me at that point Grin

No clue about danios. How big are they now? If they won't fit in anyone elses mouth they should be ok. The one month old platies are fine in the tank, nobody bothers them.

Giving birth is going to be a monthly experience now, poor Polly. And the babies will also reach adulthood soon and they will breed hence we really need to think about selling them / giving them away.

!!! So soon. Obviously no episiotomy last time! Is she tandem feeding considering the last batch are still so young?

Our baby danios are still in the back separate part of our tank. Number one very very scared to put them in main part of tank yet and I'm somewhat reluctant in case they do immediately get gobbled. (We have some previous experience of mini things being gobbled). Not sure however how long they can stay at the back. Confused

Anyway, Congrats again. x

Well, Polly is mummy again. She gave birth last Thursday. This time we didn't put her in a trap and let nature take its course. At first we thought there were no survivors, but I just had a close look and I discovered five healthy fry, hiding in the bogwood and plants. And there might be even more.

We had eight survivors from the last batch which we decided to keep, but now I really have to start thinking about selling them on otherwise our tank will be too overcrowded. Still nice though seeing them grow for a while.

Eau thinks they are most likely to be danios...guess I'll have to wait until they're bigger and a bit more recognisable!

You're welcome!
Congratulations on also being a fish-grandma Grin
What fish have you got? Must be egg-laying fish, they are apparently good at hiding their eggs so you might have not spotted them before.

That is fantastic! Thank you for posting it. We have somehow got some babies at the back of our tank (not got any livebearing fish Confused). Not sure whether they'll survive, but I keep looking and hoping!

Thanks again. x

Here is a little video treat for you all! Taken last night when they were 12 days old. They have free use of the tank now and seem very happy, bigger fish are transferred.

Please ignore DS shouting in the background "we want ego" (Diego as in go Diego go, as I paused it for filming) Grin

I read they can store sperm for up to six months Shock. I am wondering if wagtail is somehow dominant, like brown hair for humans, and this is why they are all turning out like their mummy.

Well, they can store sperm for some time so she may not have cheated on him. It could have been before they met. The decent thing would have been to throw out the old sperm though.

Perhaps the genes have skipped a generation and the babies look like Paul's parents?

Uh oh, I think Polly has been norty Grin I don't think that Paul is the daddy. It looks like Polly had pre-marital sex with one of her mates at the fish shop Shock
Babies growing well, they are on their own in their tank now, the others are moved to the bigger tank. And by the looks of it they are all going to be wagtail platies, just like their mummy. Paul is a sunburst though, so I think she has some explaining to do when they are reunited and he sees that his children are not his Hmm

You have links for everything, eh? Thanks so much, will read it properly later, DS wants to play with me is distracting me from mn. Looks like some good tips.

Taking pictures of fish is bloody hard. I find the best way is to take about 500 pictures, that way one of them is bound to be in focus (or good enough). There are some tips here, it is meaningless to me but I just about know which way around to point a camera so maybe you'll get more out of it!

NoWittyName · 16/03/2012 15:00

Leave it too long and they'll be at the stage where they don't want to pose and smile for the camera! x

MamaPizza · 16/03/2012 12:36

I have tried on macro, but I still need to zoom in as they are so tiny (rice grain size) and then it doesn't want to focus. Macro without zooming is fine focus wise, but then you can't see them, especially not on the tiny mn pictures.

Try the macro setting on your camera - looks like a little flower symbol.

Aw, they'll be off to university before you know it Grin Glad they're doing OK.

MamaPizza · 16/03/2012 07:55

No pictures as the camera doesn't seem to be able to zoom in enough, but they are all doing well. Six in the box very happy, the four outside in the main tank seem ok too, although yesterday I was only able to spot three, but they are so good at hiding, I am not worried yet.

I know you were kidding Grin. I first wrote out a long message about how Polly is constantly having her boobies out to feed them, the stinky nappies and that she is exhausted but then changed it Wink They are really cute though when they wake up, love watching all my fish do this in the mornings.
