I've always thought that awards like the Oscars are a bit unfair as the nominations only cover one year's worth of films. So every film is competing with other films released only in the same year. If there is a year with multiple blockbuster films like Oppenheimer/Barbie, another slightly less popular film will miss out on an award. But perhaps if that slightly less popular film had come out the previous year, where there was no competition from those huge blockbusters, the lightly less popular film would have won.
Are there any film awards that cover a wider time span, like 5 years or 10 years? There are lists like BFI's "greatest films of all time" but that's not the same as an award. I understand that a wider time span would also be unfair the other way if only one award in each category were given out every 5 years, as less popular films would always be trounced by the blockbusters, but that could be solved by increasing the number of the same awards. For example, instead of giving out 5 "Best Actor" awards in 5 consecutive years where each year's pool consists of films only released that year, there would still be 5 "Best Actor" awards given out all at once at the end of a 5 year period where the pool includes films released in the past 5 years.
