Morning

I am looking forward to the release of Ghost Stories next April:
www.imdb.com/title/tt5516328/

Looks very good from the trailer, and the theatre version is said to be very good.

I love MR James, Woman in Black and all the classic style ghost stories. Also love The Ring, Paranormal Activity series, and anything Stephen King.

I don’t like anything very gory or that has excessive violence/torture in it, do not find that entertaining whatsoever. Having said that, I did enjoy and highly recommend The Last Shift (which was fairly gory but not ott) www.imdb.com/title/tt2965466/

What are your favourite ghost story style films? I am looking for good scary films to watch on dark and gloomy nights!

Thanks so much.

I saw Ghost Stories at the theatre in Sydney (I specify Sydney as I seem to remember reading that it changes slightly for different audiences) thought it was absolutely dire. A few predictable jump scares, a lot of nasty loud music, some weird ohp photos that seemed to have just been thrown in to add some disgust value, and a rather bizarre end that I didn't understand. Nothing that played on my mind, nothing truly scary.

Woman In Black was brilliant though!

It follows is very good, much better than I thought it would be.
Just watched The Vault on Netflix, very good.

I would second The Innocents - it’s in bkack and white and very atmospheric. When teaching Turn of the Screw, I show it to my oh-so-cool sixth formers and it properly gives them the chills!

Another vote for It follows. I also really like Shutter (it's on netflix) it's a remake of a Thai horror film and although probably not as good (I haven't seen the original) it's got a good ending.
Also went to see the Ghost stories play and spent most of the time hiding behind my hands, and I love horror!

Kwaidan. It is a Japanese portmanteau film of 4 ghost stories. I remember it being very scary and also very beautiful.

Although the film is Japanese it based on short stories set in Japan written by an American author Lafcadio Hearn. The stories are good too.

Also Lake Mungo. It's a slow burn but the pay off is good

If you're considering foreign with subs, maybe you can get hold of Rouge, Cantonese ghost / love story. Quite old but really very good. Not gory but a great story.

There's 2 films which absolutely scare the shit out of me. They've got some gory bits but it's not saw.

The first is is the Amityville horror.
The older version is better than the new.
The second is The clown (not to be confused with it)
I watched the clown in broad daylight and was scared. I hate clowns though so there might of been of bit of that in there too Blush

maybe not exactly what you were asking for but there's a Japanese movie on sky cinema called creepy, although not a horror it is indeed very creepy.

I saw Ghost Stories too - excellent - never thought a theatre production could be so scary.

Also saw Woman in Black at the theatre - also v scary - but not as much as the film.

Personally, one of the films that affected me most was The Others, I don't know why it affected me so much, but it scared the bejesus out of me. I was pregnant with my first when we saw it at the cinema, and I was to scared to go to the loo in the night for weeks!

Gothika is quite scary while you're watching it - it's jumpy - but didn't affect me afterwards.

Ghost stories from the BBC sounds good. I love anything by MR James so I reckon I'd like it.

As an aside does anyone subscribe to Shudder, which is a horror film website?

Personal Shopper - maybe not a satisfying story but very atmospheric.

Have you watched the Ghost Stories For Christmas from the BBC? A mixed bag but some were great...

The Changeling - the original George C Scott version - is great and super eerie.

Oh yes the original Haunting of Hill House is great - haven't watched it for years, time to revisit it!

Ouija, Annabelle: Creation, Rings, Sadako vs. Kayako are really scary. I couldn't walk out of the house in the night for days after watching these. Grin
