Fasting / 5:2 diet

Stacy Sims - ditching the fasting in Peri

I have been doing 16:8 for about 6 years on and off and it worked really well for me but in the last year I find it less effective, and harder to do so have been thinking I need to stop or change it up. i've also been excercising more.

Then happened to hear Stacy Sims on the Zoe podcast.
She says that all advice on fasting is based on data and studies on men.
She said some really interesting things about fasted cardio for women (not recommended) and fasting in general for women.
She also is a big advocate for women lifting heavy weights and spoke a lot about optimum excercise for women.

As I was feeling like a change was needed I am going to ditch my daily fasting 16:8 for a while and see what happens.

Watch this space!

Anyone else hear that podcast or read her books?
I like her and from what I can tell, seems more informed and trustworthy than Mindy Pelz, who, from what I can glean, is not qualified, full of shit and is basically a bit of a quack!

Watching with interest!

What is fasted cardio? Why is it not recommended?

Hi also interested and hope the change is helpful for you! but just as a reverse argument - if studies haven’t been done on women how can Stacey sims know fasted cardio is harmful for women. Essentially she would be making her own judgments on limited Information available and her own smaller scale studies in the same way as Mindy pelz? I think Michael Mosley had a very small study on one of his tv shows and women performed better in a fed state but not all the women and it was only a handful of women taking part (this is from memory of several years ago) I will try and find the Zoe podcast to have a listen as it sounds very interesting and I want to start exercising so it might give me some inspiration!

I really like her books yes, must check out the podcast thanks!

@OctopusRule fasted cardio is when you exercise before eating anything - her argument is that it puts the body under unnecessary stress, essentially, which is not good for us peri/menopausal women

@moderationincludingmoderation Hi, have you got an update on how things are going? I also saw the Dr Stacy Sims Zoe podcast and have started just recently trying to eat protein before exercising following years of early morning fasted exercise. I've signed up for the Power Happens course she has developed with Hailey Happens Fitness. I'm only on week 2 so will see where it goes. Also trying to hugely up my protein intake, as recommended for perimenopausal women!

@Heldri Hey Heldri, i havent been very consistent with my excercise, plus been away for a week, so don't think I can give a fair assessment yet!
But i have been making a conscious effort to eat before I excercise in particular, and I can't say I feel any heavier or bigger. The first few weeks when I was consistent, I would say I felt less bloated, but I think its too early to be sure!
I definitely am going to keep it up. It feels 'right' for now.
Let me know how you get on!

I'm 49, in peri and still doing 16/8. Been doing it for about ten years and think I'll be doing it the rest of my life. It still works well for me. I'm easily staying slim and healthy (despite eating a lot) and more importantly, I just feel great. When I don't fast, such as on holidays, I feel terrible.
Obviously if it's no longer working for you, you should try something else.

Thanks @moderationincludingmoderation , I'll try and remember to update on the thread. Challenge for me will be trying to eat the required protein and let it digest somewhat before exercising, when I'm back at work next week. I'll just need to get up earlier! I'm trying to accept that this is going to be a long process, in terms of seeing results, with the combination of exercise (mainly weights) and increased protein. I'd love to get some sort of kick-start in terms of seeing a reduction in the belly fat, but just think now it's going to take some time so I'm trying to keep focused. @SallyWD that's great that the fasting works for you and as you're getting the results you want, then it's obviously the right thing for you and proves we are all different!

I’ve been wondering this. Most medical trials are only on men. It was something ACT UP (American AIDS grassroots organisation) raised in the 1980s and yet here we are 40 yrs later and not much has changed in this regard.

I suspect I’m in peri and Fast 800 is the only way I can lose wight now.
