5:2 Diet Thread: Part Three. Come join us!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

Uggalug, it's unlikely to be 5lbs of fat you've gained. If you had a chippy on Sunday you may well have had more than the usual amount of food still in your system on Monday morning and that will have shown up on the scales even though it is not body fat. Also, if you?re like me there will have been salt on that chippy which could have caused a little water retention. It could be that you haven?t really put on 5lb.

That said, it is possible to put on weight doing 5:2 if you overeat non-fast days. What you?ve eaten doesn?t sound that bad. How strict you need to be on your non-fast days will depend on a few things. If you are tall, very active, young, male and have a lot of weight to lose then you probably wouldn't need to be too strict with what you eat on non-fast days as your body needs a lot of calories to maintain its weight. But your body?s need for calories reduces if you are female, older, shorter, not very active or if you don?t have much weight to lose. You can work out how many calories your body needs with a TDEE calculator. There is a link to one in the OP.

I?d say keep going with 5:2 and see if those 5lb come back off again, but if they don?t then try working out your TDEE and track your calories for a while just to see if over the week you are staying within your TDEE on non-fast days. (I hate calorie counting but I did this for a week when I came back to the UK after six months abroad and it helped).

Hi started the 5:2 diet a while back an lost 5lb over 2 months, while continuing to stick to the plan I went out 2 wknds in a row for dinner and drank alcohol, an had a chippy yesterday, I stuck to 500 calories on my fast days and didn't over indulge on my feast days, on an odd day I treated myself to a cinnamon bun, but not much rubbish other than that, anyway I weighed myself this morn and I have gained the 5lb again :( so I'm wondering do u have to be wile strict with urself on the feast days and don't drink much alcohol for the weight to stay off???

first fasting day. Finding it really hard, can't stop thinking about food LOL. Had brekkie, now on decaf black coffee and ginger and lemon tea. Trying to keep myself busy. Any advice anyone can give would be fab. xx

Hmmm, I'm now on my third week. I don't gorge on the 5 days, just sensible eating.

I've not lost so much as a pound!!!! What's going on? It's becoming really upsetting.

Anyone else experienced this....any pearls of wisdom??

Hi - I am new to this message board and looking for some advice/encouragement.
I have been on 5:2 fasting for a week and a half (3 fasts so far). In addition I took up running three weeks ago and am now running (not very far but its better than nothing!) 3 times a week.
I was devastated to find that on weighing myself this morning I have not lost 1 lb!! Very demoralising. I have been eating freely on no fast days - do I need to reign in the clarie consumption on these days too do you think (I tend to eat rather unhealthily as have a v sweet tooth)?
I'm going to continue as hope there will be a cumulative effect but was hoping for some quicker results - anyone else had the same experience? Any advice much appreciated?

thefastdiet.co.uk/michaels-christmas-blog/ is the site where they blog about this diet. Iv read the book and this is my first day. Iv eaten my 500cals between 10am-1pm today so now nothing until 1pm tomorrow I think....? I need to loose 21pounds atleast and have got two kids so shouldn't be to much hassle to busy...it's doing there tea that will test me!!!!

I recently started the 5:2 diet and have got through my first Fast day. I have no idea what to eat on a normal day though! How many calories are you eating on a feast day? I don't want to go overboard and undo all the hard work. Any comments appreciated.

Day one and I am feeling proud but weeeeeak! Does anyone have good suggestions for vegetarians please? I usually rely a lot on cheese and nuts for protein and prefer to limit my soya intake.

oh....and justs to add I'm 51, weigh around 11 stone ... and 5 foot 2...and am almost as wide as I am high!!! not a pretty sight lolol

Hello....bit nervous.....just joined and have been reading this thread for hours and hours to try to find out info on this 5:2 woe. My sis has been on it for almost a year and keeps encouraging me (gently) to try it as I am constantly upset at my 3 stone weight gain since quitting smoking 2 and a half yrs ago. So am on my second fast day....but am on a panic as Im not sure if ive had too many cals. I had nothing all day except black coffee and then at 5pm had a packet of asda instant noodles with a handful of fresh spincach thrown in along with some salad bits (sounds gross I know...but it was delish). Anyway...can anyone please advise me....have I blown my fasting day by this meal? thanks

Hi, brand new to this but started on the 5:2 10 days ago. Love it!
I am doing it for the health benefits as my sister had breast cancer diagnosed a year ago (she was 47) and my mum has had a tumour removed from her jaw last week. Both are doing well, but the anti cancer thing made me think I could give this a go.
I am 49 (!) and was 156lbs. Now 10 days after starting and I have lost 6lbs! I have another 3lb to go so I can fit into last summer's jeans ;-)
I 'low cal' Tue and Thur as this fits my days. I eat 550 cals and fit this in between waking and sleeping (dont understand the 16 hr thing??) which is easy to do. I am strict (yog for breakfast and a tea, soup and a Ryvita for lunch, apple mid aft (when daughters home from school and eating in front of me!) normal meal but NO carbs (pasta, potatoes, rice, bread etc) for tea.
Lots of water (been getting headaches every low cal day).
Definitely lost weight fast (too fast?) and may go to one day a week if I drop below my goal.
Eat whatever I want other 5 days, inc chips, chocolate, cakes, biscuits. I dont eat extra those days though as I dont feel I am extra hungry, but dont eat less than before either. Starving on the low cal days but what the heck, feeling hungry for a day is do-able, and there is always a 'food' day tomorrow, heh heh.

5:2 is working for me on the outside, hope all the good stuff going on inside too :-)

Hi, I watched the Horizon program recently and have started this diet today (wish me luck).

Today is/was my 1st fast day and has been ok, so far.

I have consumed appx 600 cals today and am finding it quite interesting in working out portions/cals etc....

I am currently planning on fasting on my non-exercise days (Monday & Thursday), but am interested to know if exercise on a fast day is a "no no".

Hi,
Am new to the thread AND the diet. Started on Monday and had my first fast day then, second one is tomorrow. I don't have a lot to lose, just a few pounds but what I want to know is when should you expect to start seeing weight loss? After the first week or more like 2 weeks? I like the idea of this as a lifestyle change as well as weight loss because it makes you feel less bad for those treats in life like curry or wine but I just want to know when I can firmly say if it's not working.

Hi all.
Just joining for a little support. DH and I have been doing 5:2 since the beginning of August. We are mainly doing it for health reasons - to get some protection against cancers, Alzheimer's etc. but we were happy with the weight loss side effect!
I started at 75kg, and a BMI of 25.1. We use myfitnesspal to ensure we keep up the right amount of calories on non-fasting days (we call them restriction days as it is not really a true fast and I kept getting talked at by people about what real fasting is etc and they were missing the point of what we are doing).

We started eating 3 small meals (I stick to 400-500 cals) but now I am down to lunch and dinner (btw, Dr Mosley has tweeted that he thinks you can spread the cals on a fasting day and he used to have two meals. He now does 1:6 as he was losing too much weight).

I eat a minimum of 1500 cals on non-fasting days, and end up with a week with an average of about 1200 (when you take into account fasting days). We do quite a lot of exercise, and we eat those calories to maintain the 1500.
I am down to 71.3kg and my body fat is slightly reduced (our scales are good, but I do not think they are very reliable for body fat).
I am a little bemused at the weight loss plateau I have reached (DH too). Most of our weight loss was in the first month - about 3 kg. in the last month I have only lost 0.5kg in total. Sad

Any thoughts on the plateau and whether I should be changing anything? Like I said, we are not doing this solely for weight loss, but I would like to get down to 68kg and shifting these last kgs is proving difficult!
