Choosing an instrument - where to start?

We've just had a letter home saying that next year dd(7) can do lessons with the county music service. We have a choice between flute, trumpet, keyboard, violin, clarinet or drums.
I know dd would love to learn an instrument but I haven't a clue where to start with choosing the right one. We have to commit to the lessons for 1 year so I want to make the right choice. Help!!

They did the same when I was at school and the peripatetic teachers came round and let you have a go. I remember trying out for a brass instrument and couldn't get the hang of it at all. Same with the clarinet. I would imagine the instrumental teachers will have a fair idea if she is suited once she has a go. She might change her mind after a year and want to pick something else. It's never too late to change with any musical instrument.

Well this is what I'm thinking - how can she decide what is 'right' rather than what she just 'fancies'? I want to be able to say lets look at all the instruments and decide together but I don't know how to guide her.
As far as I'm aware they've only played around with some bongo type drums and keyboards.

Don't they give them the chance to try out the instruments in school? Because what you/she think she might like to play may not necessarily be the right instrument for her.
