Ethical dilemmas

Sent in error, should I return it?

My DS had a fairly expensive £100+ item which broke not long after we bought it. I returned the item for replacement/repair.

I didn’t hear anything back for a while after sending the item so called to find out what was going on. To my surprise, they refunded MORE than I paid onto my account so I could buy the newer model which was due to be released as the old model was no longer available. The money is still sitting in my shopping account but I didn’t reorder as I was still thinking about which type to get.

Then, last week they randomly sent a replacement, the new, more expensive model. I was taken by surprise and accepted it. I had been sent a delivery code which I gave to the driver.

What do I do? Do I let them know they’ve refunded AND sent a replacement anyway. Do I keep quiet and keep both the replacement and the refund. Will they even notice? Will they even care?

I would contact them, especially if it's not Amazon.

It is a very very large company. Of course if it were a smaller company, I’d definitely let them know.

It's not their decision it's their error and legally you can't keep it. Your morals are skewed. It's not a finders keepers game and we aren't 8.

As it’s a big company I would keep it. This happened to me with Amazon.

This wouldn't influence me. I'd call and tell them. I've had this type of thing happen and I always report it. Often they let me keep the item.

I think it's scummy and dishonest to keep the money. You know it isn't yours.

I'd tell them. What if it was a mistake made by some young, junior employee who eventually gets the sack for it?

Last year I ordered a £70 refurbished phone from a small company. They sent me a £900 folding Motorola RAZR instead. I played with it for half an hour then sent it back!
