Ds is in Year 3 and came home today saying he's been told he's 3c. What is that?

hercules don't panic he is in year 3 so he is the lower end of KS2 because KS2 consists of years 3, 4, 5 and 6. It's nothing to do with levels - is he got level 6 he would be said to be in the lower end of KS2. As he got level 3c that's about average for year 3 - so he is very normal. I expect there are children who scored higher than him in his class and children who scored lower. On tp I had a year 4 class (so a year older than your son) and some of the children where still level 1 for maths (they should get a 2B at the end of year 2) so they were very weak.

Why not go and ask his teacher if you are worried about it? Ask her how she made her judgement?

Why are they giving out SAT-type grades other than in Y2 and Y6?

SOme schools do optional SATS in the summer term each year for maths and literacy, that's where he could have got the level from. They are basically the same as SATS, but for different tear groups. There are three levels in KS2, 3,4 and 5 and they are all divided into 3 sub levels, c being the lower and a being the higher. CHildren should be attaining level 4 or above by the end of year 6, so he is well on the way. Don't worry about it, I'm a primary teacher and think all levels are crap, inaccurate guess work at best rather than a definitive answer

Popsycal is my SATS guru!!!!

Teachers need to constantly assess the children to make sure they are making progress through the levels. That would be why the child was given a level - it isn't just done in SATS or optional SATS but should be on-going. My school does it half termly. -

In theory, pupils are 'supposed' to gain half a level each year......I am working backwards here as Key stage two is where I teach (in a middle school so no ks1 sats)....therefore, the 'average' year 2 should be level 2 (??? i think!) since the 'average' year 6 should be level 4......

I SHOULD kno wthis but as I say, I have never worked in KS1 and our school is y5 to 8....

SEXGODDESS - is your dd still sitting her level 6 tests then? teacher seen the light yet?!?!1 pmsl!

oh damn - sorry - i forgot to read properly!!

well....what I said about half a level a year still stands.....what did he get in his ks2 SATS?

(Not that I have any faith at all in SATS, fwiw - but that is another discussion!! lol)

Cant remember popyscal - tbh I didnt pay much attention to them as I hold very little by them. seen too many kids with predicted grades get either much higher or lower.

I bet dd gets 4s for everything just to spite her teacher!!!

Janh · 23/04/2004 23:19

pops, while we're on SATs (and you feel like ranting) DS2's class have been doing practice papers for WEEKS - it is driving him nuts - sooooo boring.

Is this normal or just a pushy head desperate to look good in the old PANDAs?

Seems a bit steep Jan!

At this point,I tend to cool off and if we do any testing I do it in bits as little mini exercises. They are knackered at this point, poor loves!

Maybe I should send in a note excusing him?

(That would go down really well!)
