Long long story. My DD is due to take GCSE's in a few weeks. She has missed a lot of school and especially English. She has to do a controlled assessment on Parent / child relationships and poems by Jonson and scannell. She has received no tuition on this at all and has no access to her English teacher. Are there any websites that can help her? Or anyone got any hints on what she's to write?

It's act 1 sc 2

Act 3 sc4

Act 3 sc5

Thankyou, she's in such a panic about it all.

I think this is one assignment which includes poetry and Shakespeare on the same theme. The Capulet/Juliet relationship would contrast well with the relationships in the poems.

Make sure she has lots of quotes, OP, mentions what effect the texts have on the audience/reader and has specifically compared the relationships. She should write about language, imagery etc. (especially the metaphor of war in Nettles) but relate everything back to the question. It's actually a great essay topic - I really hope she does well Smile

Yes Drigon we used that so at least we knew what was going on !

The teacher gave her these notes and we're not sure what to write -
Juliets death and Capulets realisation and Jonsons grief-his sin
Mourning and consequences/change

Other than this bit I think we've cobbled together a fairly decent essay.

We also used Spark notes online which translates the text into modern English. Hope you get some help soon.

We've tried BBC Bitesize but it doesn't really cover the things indicated in the notes. Ive emailed and phoned the teacher and she said she'll go and see DD but she hasn't. Its so frustrating as every day that passes is another wasted day of DD not getting any help.

BBC bitesize is excellent. My son did class based assessments earlier this year on R and J ( we're in S. Wales). There are usually specific quotes given which they must write and analyse. They can take in a half page of notes.Sorry not to be of much help. Could you ask for more info.so it can be prepared?

Here's the MS filestore.aqa.org.uk/subjects/AQA-4700-W-SP-14.PDF - you want pages 37-8.

The CA tasks are set by the individual teacher or sometimes by the school for the whole cohort - can you email the teacher for task titles?

Can you let us know which poems?
Find out exactly which CA for which exact GCSE. You should be able to see mark schemes online.

She really isn't being supported at all. Ive written to the Board of Govenors but was told to have a meeting with the HT. We did, but his idea of what is happening is very different to the reality. Trouble is we're running out of time, exams start very soon.

So sorry, raven. It doesn't sound like she is being properly supported in her learning by the school. But you sound like a great and involved mum. I do hope you can get some better arrangements in place for her.

Thanks Raven . It seems that she can do it at home. We've had a bash at it together tonight and think we've covered most of it.

The whole situation is rubbish TBH.

One of my students is in the same boat (albeit different tasks!).

She's been in the back of my lessons all today & I've been helping her in between teaching my timetabled classes.

Big ask for your dd to do the prep independently!

ravenAK · 30/04/2014 22:08

Those scenes do make sense then, but she definitely doesn't have time to do a decent job of prepping by tomorrow.

Have a quick squizz at this?

www.markedbyteachers.com/gcse/english/how-is-the-relationship-between-lord-capulet-and-his-daughter-juliet-presented-dramatically-in-act-3-scene-5.html

Might give her some ideas - presumably the write-up under supervision is tomorrow? & she has to do the poetry essay too?

Sorry to drip feed ( frazzled) she's missed loads of lessons in all subjects. The school said she would have access to her teachers but she hasn't. She was sent home the other day because there was no one to supervise her, I was furious. She had an in line maths session today but was sent out of the room so teachers could have a meeting, there was nowhere else for her to go so she missed the maths lesson.

Sorry all I've been up to my eyes in Shakespeare ! She's doing Romeo and Juliet. Long long story but she's been permanently excluded and has to sit in a room on her own. She's been given some very rough notes on what she needs to do, it's about parent/ child relationships .

which play? Presumably there are theme/s , plot or characters to be explored in reference to those scenes.

Yes, it could be that, couldn't it? 'Tis a mystery...

Or could be the combined English if it's two pieces - Poetry & Drama.

Report
LizzieVereker · 30/04/2014 20:53

I don't mind emailing some ideas of what to write about, or a mini essay plan. I do need to know which play and whether this is for Lang/Lit or English, please. It sounds like the AQA Literature CA.

Report
ravenAK · 30/04/2014 20:45

Not really senua - it'll be a CA the class sat months ago.

OP's dd missed it/them, & can attempt them under supervision in school at any time before Friday.

It's not routine Hw set for the whole class.
