Kings School, Winchester - Waiting list success

Harriebabe · 03/03/2014 11:57

We're out of catchment, no sibling and we didn't get a place Sad
Now waiting to hear where we are on the waiting list.

Anyone out there with encouraging stories of getting in to their first choice school after a time on the waiting list please?

Or advice on how long to wait? It's such an unsettling time as I know that they will all be chatting at school but DS is unable to be certain about where he's going.

Thank you

To add to this thread, we went to the Kings' yr6 open day recently and were told by the HT that due to the demand for secondary places from pupils residing in Winchester, the furthest (non-catchment, non-sibling) pupil starting Sept 14 was 5.5 miles from the school. This was also reinforced by Kings' governors deciding that as from Sept 14 they are reducing the subsidies to the Kings' school buses (not the catchment buses) and that there is no guarantee that these buses will continue beyond 2017.

SO 'the best' school is always going to be a misnomer. It's 'best for your DC at the time of application which can very much change over time!'

Hear hear!

talkin's DH is rubbish at bongos.

Just for the record Grin

Where did all the DC end up? Hope everyone is happy enough! I looked at Kings myself for DS1 but was a bit put off by the streaming. I have many Winch mates who have DC there but they're largely, with all due respect, a bit London, iyswim! none appear to have DC who are in any stream other than 'A'... At the time I thought DS1 would be fine at Kings but less academic DS2, not so much (weren't keen on him being in C3 for subjects rather than A2 or 3; and I wanted them at the same school), so, via a strategic (and legitimate!) house move, they're at Thornden. It's a good school but the fact remains, DS1 is very 15 and with the best will in the world, we've lead that horse to 'glorious', deep, cool blue water but can we make it DRINK?!

To that end, I am looking very favourably at guiding DS1 towards BP for 6th form rather than PS as though 'Thornden goes to PS', at it were, his needs will be better served at BP.

SO 'the best' school is always going to be a misnomer. It's 'best for your DC at the time of application which can very much change over time!'

Just resurrecting this thread to see whether either children made it to top of Kings list or are still on it or what your thoughts are on the other schools that they may have chosen instead?
Thanks

Perhaps, as many, many people have reiterated recently, it is mainly down to parental guidance and support.... so DS will do okay wherever he goes as long as he's happy to be guided by us, supported by us and has positive, successful role models (in life as well as Education).

I've met pupils from each of the local schools, all charming and getting on well Smile. But they would be the ones who are chosen to show off the school to prospective new parents wouldn't they?

I know who he is, TalkinPeace - that guy who goes round schools playing the bongos! He pops up everywhere.

I know what you mean about the PS bus pass. What is annoying is that one bus company is more convenient in the mornings, and another in the afternoons, but one has to plump for one or the other.

I recently encountered a girl who is at Quilley. To my shame I had assumed that everyone there is pregnant (girls) or is permanently on a skateboard with a can of cider (boys and girls). This girl was charming and her elder sister at Man University studying engineering. The mother said they liked Quilley (and then Barton) very much.

DD has had a few occasions where she spent a few hours at Crestwood and she always came back home shocked at the behaviour and language! I think she wants to break away from some of the local kids. In all honesty I know Quilley won't be very different, but the school is so small which I think makes it more manageable. It has been such a nightmare...
But as someone from the admission team told me, we are lucky she has a school place!

is it worth arranging an extra visit to Crestwood?
is her current school shut on Wednesday? as Crestwood is open and you could just go and look
or go after school to look at the site when sports and music are going on

Gutted!
I did like Wyvern but the logistics to get dd to school and all! And she didn't like it that much.
Wish Crestwood hadn't left her with such a bad impression as it would be the easiest school to go to. We had applied for Thornden just in case... but there as well dd has gone the wrong way on the waiting list!

I drove past Wyvern on Friday, and have met kids from there at various inter school events : a good vibe I have to say.

DD starts at Symonds in September - am saving now for the bus pass!

Thanks Chica - we'd already factored in the cost of the bus journey and I work in Winchester too so would have been in a good position to do some dropping off/running around.

We'll not get in now though Sad.

Oh no, so she's gone down? Sad So we will have too Sad. Yes, I thinked we've resigned ourselves to not getting a place there now.

We're still very much considering Wyvern... so it's either Wyvern or Crestwood for us now.

Just called admission team, was hoping... well... dd is now 26th on the list! So we are ready to apply for Quilley and are slowly forgetting about Kings Sad.

I forgot about buses! The cost for the Kings bus from Chandlers Ford to Kings is £280 per term. Cheaper than school fees though, but still a consideration I think.

What about swanmore? Don't think it's over subscribed and there are buses to and from Eastleigh. It seems to ship children in from a very wide area.

My 2 are at Romsey school and very happy. Dyslexic DS 1 is outlooking B in English GSCE from a KS2 SAT result of 3. I give full credit to the school for the support they have given him to get him to that level.

Have friends with kids at MB, and they are equally happy with the standard.

In fact , the only school I ever hear moans about is HCS.

My kids are at MB, my catchment school is what was Millbrook
and no DH is not an inspector, he goes to lots of schools every year - quite a few local MN parents have worked out who he is but please do not out him!

Chica that was the impression I gained tonight after chatting with the current pupil. I gathered she had had some kind of emotional problems and a bit of bullying at her junior school but is getting a lot of support from the school and I really like that.

Hmmm! I think she's an acquired taste. She cares passionately about the school though, even if she has a unique way of achieving it. He speaks very highly of the school, as does his ex colleague, but doesn't take any clashes with the HT into account in that opinion. It's probably in spite of that. Wink

DH said a lot of the kids there were great, especially the ones in the top sets who worked really hard. He says many of them are better behaved than where he teaches now and he would have been happy to send DD there. It doesn't rely on parental support and so much of what it does comes from within the school iyswim? So it's strong in that sense.

Ha ha, I get you! Well, DS enjoyed it but said it was really just a tour around the school with their nominated buddies. He was more excited by winning the Sports Relief thing when they returned to school.

And now we have a quandary: We've been offered a place at Wyvern! No waiting list. Which I thought was great until I took DS to cricket tonight and spent most of the hour chatting to a delightful Crestwood pupil who was a real credit to her parents and obviously the school. She is taking triple science which I didn't think they offered and really enjoys all her lessons. We've got 10 days to convince DS reach a joint decision and accept one offer and reject the other. Think we'll visit Wyvern with an open mind then see what drives DS, who is now really really wanting Kings of course.

Harriebabe, how was Crestwood's transition morning?

I asked DD why she doesn't want to go and she only said it's because she doesn't like the school and she doesn't think the kids there are nice...

Oh and I have just changed nickname(from previous above). Sorry for the confusion;-)
