Do you need Latin GCSE to study Physiotherapy?

As dd1 wants to do this but has been put in the Classics group rather than the Latin group. She hates Latin but would take it up if she had to. I've googled it and am none the wiser.

I have actually contacted the school and they have confirmed unnecessary. Both her aunts are physios (both with latin o level!) so work experience won't be an issue. Thanks all.

The ability to use google (so you can find this sort of information out) is a useful but not a CV skill.

No. You don't need to know Latin to memorise a whole load of bones.

Work experience and good a levels in biology, maths or chemistry, maybe sports science.

It's a really competitive field now.

I teach Latin GCSE at a state comp.

I'd love to sell it to you (although our course is over-subscribed) as a generally fab thing to do, but I honestly cannot think of any career whatsoever you'd be unable to do without Latin GCSE.

One of our babysitters is an unnervingly clever young medical student, who's borrowed some books from me to teach herself GCSE Latin, but it's not actually a requirement!

absolutely not - I knew billions of physios at uni. none of them studied latin. tell your daughter to do well in biology and also get loads of work experience/shadowing tho.

However, part of my degree is physiology and I studied Latin. I did find it easier to learn some technical terms as I understood where it had come from, but I would have got by without Latin.

I doubt it. Not many state schools offer it now and you don't need it for medicine.

Not saying - but I might have been being a little disingenuous; I know one of the preps does Latin for a year or two, but none of the senior schools at all.

I wonder if it's slightly a competitive thing: because none of them offer it, none of the other feel they need to? Doesn't stop us sending many students off to med/vet school every year at our school.

Gosh, what part of the world are you in, Hmm? In SE London not only do all the private schools offer Latin GCSE (the academically selective ones, anyway) but so do all the outlying grammar schools and a fair few of the comprehensives, including the one my daughter went to. Camden School for Girls is the only comp I know of where you can do Greek as well. Very few schools of any description offer Ancient Greek, which is sad.

Plus, not only do most state schools not teach latin - none of ours do including any of the grammars - none of the private schools round here do either...so that would be an entire county of children unable to study physiotherapy or medicine or vet science? Ignore!

You don't need Latin for any medical course. However, a very basic level does help a bit such as knowing how to make plurals what ending mean, but this is possible with very basic Latin. I' m a vet and did Latin between 10 and 13 years of age so very basic.

I've just finished doing Latin at uni as part of my Classical Studies degree and I know absolutely no one with a latin GCSE, I'm not entirely sure you actually need a Latin GCSE for anything.

I have a friend who taught medicine and he said that it was definitely an advantage to know Latin - although it is not a requirement. You have to learn anatomy for physiotherapy (from the greek BTW) too.

Whether it is worth making your daughter study a subject she hates I can't say. Maybe she would enjoy it more if she thought there was a point to learning it.

We did Google and to be fair on one website it says Latin may be a requirement. But Cardiff uni doesn't ask for it.
