Hi, I tried posting on primary education but no responses so far, I was wondering if anyone have any experience of either Thornton College or Akeley Wood Junior (near Buckingham)?
Would appreciate any opinions/experience.

Ah! So that’s not flash then? Not in the 8% who can afford private fees? You still didn’t want state provision. It is available and has to be good enough for others. You might put yourself on a moral pedestal but nearly everyone else is paying to stay separate from other dc they aren’t keen on. Unless of course Akeley Wood is a sen school now. You still had money to separate your dc from others and that’s flash. How much did you pay each year?

Not necessarily. However what’s wrong with having money? Also boarding schools tend to have shorter terms and longer days with more going on. Sport is taught everywhere. Dc at Stowe accept school life and everyone buys into that as it’s boarding. It’s a way of life. So if it means Saturdays, so be it. You get more holidays.
I think if you pay, 92% of the population don’t, you are flashier than the vast majority anyway. Clearly money is not short and there’s enough to buy schooling which many consider very flash. In North Bucks the private schools take those who don’t get the 11 plus and are therefore about the same as the better secondary schools because they are largely populated by dc who cannot get into RLS. All those parents are doing is turning their noses up at dc at the secondary moderns and paying to stay separate. Universally they think they are a better quality family and don’t want their dc to mix with dc at the secondaries. It might not be quite the London flash but it’s north Bucks snobbery at its best. Anyone not snobby should move to Waddesdon catchment and save the money.
We used to get Thornton girls into RLS 6th form and they were let of the leash for the first time in their lives!

I am local and I’d still choose Stowe. It’s a name that still means something. It’s got a few chattering people who dislike it but generally it’s far superior to Akeley Wood. It’s more expensive for obvious reasons! Look at what you get.

The success of a 6th form at Thornton will depend on how many stay. For years the brighter girls have gone to RLS or Stowe.
If anyone in North Bucks doesn’t know Waddesdon, I’m amazed. It has a tiny catchment but it’s the best school that’s not a grammar in Bucks: it’s outstanding.
Within the private schools ranks, Stowe is a name people know. No one knows the others. Cognita is an owner of very average private schools. If you are going to pay, pay for something that has everything you could want. Stowe isn’t that difficult to get into.
