Can anyone help me advise my son about shaving and stuff, please?

He's 14 and there's hair growing above his top lip. Is there a technique? Anything he needs to watch out for? Should he start when it gets thicker? I'm assuming an electric razor is easier to use but don't have a clue

Also, should I pop him to have a chat with the GP about checking his testicles for lumps and bumps or do they do that at school? I don't think he'd appreciate this chat from me.

Hi OP.

Shaving: he might not want to just yet, as it's another sign of childhood's end. Sounds like bumfluff ATM. When he gets around to it, get him King of Shaves gel. The razors can be any multiblade disposable. Keep a separate flannel. Shave in the direction the hair grows, rinse throughly afterwards and use a balm. Boots moisturiser for men (grey tube) is pretty good.

As for lumps, check with school. All our local secondaries do it in PHSE.

Nowadays I'm sure there's a vid on YouTube or get him to google it.

I've never used moisturiser or anything like that that.
And cutting yourself to ribbons is a rite of passage.

I've told my teen to shave his off as it looks silly, I'm sure he'll do it when he's ready.

He's dyspraxic and has a sensory problem so I can see him calling an ambulance and never shaving again if he cuts himself. He's said he'd like a moustache so that he can curl the ends. I think it's OK for now by the sounds of it, being his mum I don't know this stuff though. Thank you for your help.

Hi there. Not sure if this helps but my daughter is dyspraxic and our local child services does a class for teens and pre teens on how to do all that self care stuff. Shaving might be a bit tough as have to coordinate, do things backward in a mirror and focus! May be worth checking out your local services?

Thank you. He's on the waiting list for OT help and I've no idea when that will be. A razor really wouldn't be a good plan, I was going to get him an electric thingy.

If he is going to use an electric razor, get one that has a moisturiser pack built in and he will have to shave regulaly otherwise the blades will pull out the hair if it is too long and it will get unconfortable.

he also has to be prepared to bed the razor in as well as it will shave better with more use.

Its a personal preference but I wouldn't use a foil razor.
