I just spent £101 on a week's shopping for two people

... and it feels like a tipping point.

Admittedly it included cleaning bits and bobs, two bottles of booze and some fresh fish for the friends we're having round tomorrow but still having friends round is a fairly normal activity. No other luxury items, no ready meals, no extravagant deli snacks etc, just a normal shop.

I don't need advice on budgeting, I can do that. I wasn't shopping to a budget today. I'm just noting that for me at least I've reached the point where I can spend £100 on a weekly shop for two without even trying and it's pretty worrying.

I get that there's booze, cleaning stuff ect, but that still seems quite a lot.

I spend about £65 a week for two adults and a toddler (including cleaning stuff, but very rarely any booze). I don't consciously scrimp, that's just what we buy.

Price rises are a problem, but your bill would be very very easy to cut down if you want or need.

Yes I know. Like I say I'm not asking for budgeting tips.

And yes, it's a lot. That's my point lol 😅

Snap OP, I just spent just over £100 on my weekly shop. That’s for 5 of us so not bad but 6 months ago a shop was £80ish and that included a few treats, tonight’s shop was a basic shop, nothing treaty.

It's quite a moment, isn't it?

Yep noticing the same here. No strict budget yet per se for a weekly/10 day at a push shop but for 4 of us it's regularly coming in at £130-140 now at Aldi.

Pressed send too soon.... it used to be £80-90

To be honest that doesn't sound loads to me especially as it includes alcohol. We're a family of four and I estimate we're spending at least £160 a week at the moment. We could cut down but have different preferences/intolerances so I can never just cook one meal that suits everyone. I reckon prices have gone up 10% in the last year though.

Aye, previously when I've done a sort of free wheeling shop like that, not really adding up as I go, it's been about £60, maybe £70 if I really went for it in the cheese aisle.

So this is a lot more.

Yes, I used to budget around £120 pw for our Tesco delivery shop for 5 of us. Now if I want to keep it to that it’s the bare basics, no treats, no extras etc. Generally it’s closer to £140-150.

It’s easily done..

Me too! I spent £105 this month.. and it’s two of us and a cat. Needed all the basics and cleaning things. Honestly was so shocked. When we met we’d spend £60 on food a week!

I was in Pets at Home last week and the dog food I buy is three times as expensive as it was five years ago when I first bought it.

Surely it is only worrying if you can’t afford it 🤷‍♀️

Our shopping for a family of two for a week is just over £40 but we don't drink and don't generally have guests over.

I think I'd cry if our bill came to £101!

Yeah, I was saying the same to dh
today. We're mainly veggie but our bills have gone up a lot in the last year.

Ours came to £80 the other day, two adults, basic shop with some cleaning stuff we'd run out of, no alcohol. Last year a similar shop would have been £60 max. It's terrifying

Yeah my last Tesco was £120 and that was with super-saver delivery, no booze, very little meat and no cleaning products. Three adults. It was a shocker. Need to actually work out how much going to Aldi costs me in diesel and do a comparative shop I think.

Fish is very expensive. So is wine. If you take those off, I don't think you've done badly. Pretty much everything I put in my basket now seems to have goneup by about 25% in the past few months.

2 adults and 1 teenager here and today I spent £160 for one weeks shopping and I know I will have to get more fresh stuff in. It did include pet food, 2 dogs 5 cats, some nice picnic food and bottle of wine. I would try aldi but our one is dire and I like the shop scan and pack option at Tescos.

@WingingItSince1973 snap, the vegetables at both our Aldi and Lidl are diabolical. It's actually a waste of money buying them because they're rotten. So going there is wasteful rather than thrifty.

I agree that Aldi/Lidl fruit & veg don't keep long because they're already ripe which is fine if you're using soon. However, buying fresh produce elsewhere if using a meal plan is more economical.

I dpebt £75 at Lidl not including meat and cleaning products because I've got some already. That worked out an expensive shop for the 4 humans and a cat.

£96 for a shop being delivered today (delivery fee extra) - 2 adults, one child, one pet. Includes bottle of wine which we’ll donate to PTA for school fete, cleaning bits. I was shocked to see some items rising by 10p, 20p - it all adds up. Looked at my virtual basket before checking out and couldn’t get it down any further.

Went to Lidl the other week and don’t feel like I saved a lot. The cheese was tasteless and we ended up throwing it away as we didn’t even want it melted down. The broccoli lasted 2 days in the fridge before it started going bad.

Yes I know exactly what you mean. I online shop with Tesco every week and buy a lot of the same things. Obviously Ive noticed it creeping up but now it’s really noticeable every week even with only the basics in the trolley.

I spent less than that on a weekly shop for 2 adults, 2 toddlers, 2 dogs and while prepping for another baby!! Where on earth are you shopping????

I spend £100+ almost every time I shop, in sainsbury, Aldi, Tesco, Costco, wherever I go. I've noticed I'm now spending £120 or £140. Frightening.
