Can anyone advise me on the best Smart Price products?

So far the squash seems ok
Peanut butter
Chocolate sandwich biscuits.

I'm thinking of branching out but don't want to waste my money!

Garvey granules, far richer, less salty and just so much nicer than bisto

Pork meatballs in fresh meat section, yummy, they are cheesy and very nice.

All biscuits

Garlic bread

Tins of soup, I buy, mushroom, chicken, veg. They are nice enough

Pasta

Rice

Rice pudding is good.
Ditto sage & onion stuffing mix. (Good filler with roasts/ grilled meat) at just pennies per packet.)
Washing up sponges (about 4p each)
DH loves the fruit scones. Says they are less sugary.
Diet lemonade 20p for a 2ltr bottle. Brilliant for kids parties, they like it just because it is fizzy. Or if you are on a diet. Forget the 20p diet coke though...

I buy quite a few bits from the smart price range, brown sauce & tomato sauce are both great especially for the money! I really dont see or taste the difference in the tomato sauce between smart price & heinz, and paying about 24p for a full bottle instead of £1 off certainly tastes better to my purse :)
Smart price boxed apple juice is great, no difference to more expensive type. Id steer clear of their chocolate spread, its ok but i normally buy their asda supermarket brand...crunchy peanut butter mmmm yummy!!!
Smart price pasta, 40p for a bag & is fab! We also get their custard creams, ginger nuts, rich tea, digestives all in smart price & all taste great :))

Yes I love their rind on smoked bacon for all the fat and salt

Report
MackerelOfFact · 21/11/2012 14:46

I also have a bit of a fondness for their rind-on back bacon but I freely admit that might be weird. It's quite salty and fatty and that's exactly why it's good.

Wow, how many times have I said the word 'fine' and 'good' in that post?!

The laundry detergent is fine (ditto Sainsbury's basics) - smells fine too.

Fruit and veg are all fine, but not necessarily always cheaper so be careful.

Biscuits are good.

Sponge scourers are fab. So is the cream cleaner (Cif-type one). Dishwasher tabs are alright.

Foil, cling film, food bags, bin bags - all good.

Flour is good, very finely ground which is good. So are the porridge oats, again quite fine which is good if you want your porridge to cook quickly!

I used to live off their instant noodles at uni but haven't tried them in a good few years!

Their frozen garlic bread is fine
biscuits
chocolate spread
squash
orange and apple juice
cheese is really really lovely all crumbly
kidney beans/chickpeas/butter beans
tinned pinapple
cleaning sponges and jcloths
dc like their hotchocolate
flour is fine

Their asda chosen by you washing up liquid is the same as fairy, the only other washing up liquid I will use. Persil/eco/any other brand does not work and last as well as fairy.

Smart Price Mature Cheddar is lovely, just as good as Cathedral City.

I agree re frozen chicken breasts. They are really good. The dc love the fromage frais too.

I heard that the Smart Price suppliers vary according to who can tender the cheapest bid for the job. So maybe one week you will get great Smart Price coffee and a few weeks later it will be someone else doing it.

I read it on Mumsnet so it must be true.

Personally, I have never been let down by SP products (apart from the watery tinned tomatoes)

I'm ok with some smart price stuff but NOT the all purpose cleaner...it's just vile!! As are the tea bags I agree with everyone on them waste of time!

Smartprice Bourbon biscuits are hideous.

Tinned sweetcorn, kidney beans are fine.

Dishwasher tabs are ok

If you can get to an aldi, quality is much better.

Sainsburys smart price teabags are nice, I had some twinings tea bags recently and wasnt massively impressed.

In my younger days I always had Twinings earl grey!

I don't mind the smart price beans and the tomatoes but totally agree about the tea bags. You need about five tea bags to make a half decent cuppa, totally pointless. I like most smart price stuff actually

The biscuits are fine, I like the Jaffa cakes, the digestives not so much. I get the mushrooms onions and potatoes. I like the beans. Tinned sweet corn is fine. I have used the thin bleach, which is fine. I have also used the clothes liquid which is ok, but I prefer the own brand adsa one to the 'smart price' . What I have found which I like is dried fake mince ( comes in savoury mince of bolognaise flavour) which add to real mince to double the amount. It only costs 65p.

Bad Smart Price:
-tinned tomatoes- too watery
-Baked beans- too watery
-Tea bags- ugh! don't!
-I wouldn't risk the sausages

GOOD Smart price
-jars of pasta sauce very good for making pizaa
-frozen chicken breasts are excellent- you get about 7 or 8 in a bag for 3.99 and they make great curries- no skin or bone.
-apple juice (NB don't buy apple juice drink, just apple juice)

  • biscuits are excellent

-tinned kidney beans are exactly the same as posh tinned kidney beans
-tinned pineapple is also excellent for topping pizzas
-fruit and veg is good
  • smoked back bacon is good
  • dishwasher tablets are not bad, they do the job.

Aldi and Lidl are indeed good, but I guess you're asking because Asda is your nearest or your all-under-one-roof shop?

Tins of sweetcorn to add to pasta dishes etc. are good.

Most of it's just fine imo I even use the sanitary towels.

I shop at Aldi though, I think the range is better.

And the stores easier to get round in 20 mins.
