Aldi comparison!

I went to Aldi yesterday and I spent £56.81

When I got home I went on //www.mysupermarket.com. Not sure if you are familiar with this site. It's for online shopping at Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys etc. you enter all your items then you can see what it would cost at each shop.

So, I entered every item that I had bought at Aldi and this was the result:

Aldi £56.81
Sainsburys £78.41
Asda. £84.09
Tesco. £86.91
I was very surprised that Asda was so high and that Sainsburys was so low

Ok, I finally did mine;

Aldi £40.61
Asda £55.16
Sainsburys £62.66
Tescos £61.02
Waitrose £67.03
Ocado £61.09.

When I used to shop in ordinary supermarkets though I used to buy the cat food from pets at home and that was an extra £10 a week on top of our food.

I was spending £65ish a week 2 years ago in Sainsburys so I cant imagine how much I would be spending if I hadnt started meal planning and having packed lunches.

My problem with Aldi is because its so much cheaper I end up buying (and eating) a lot of crap.
Like Disco biscuits. and Apple Studel mmmmmm

The only things I can't get in Aldi I buy smart price or in tescos world food aisle.

If I'm passing anyway it doesn't take too long to nip in.

Check out amazon for catering sized tea, coffee etc.

I found goose fat for half the cost of the supermarkets on there. Free delivery too.

I think I'll do that Lou. Any excuse for a chocolate bombe . I also love the word bombe with an e on the end, so will have to give it a try. They also do a salted caramel chocolate version. Decisions, decisions.

Aldi crisps are fine I had them in our packed lunch today as is the fake Lurpak spreadable, it's called Norpak which made me .
The chopped tomatoes in a carton with herbs worked a treat as pasta sauce straight from the carton but on reading the ingredients it contains quite a lot of salt. I thought it was just tomatoes and herbs.
I'm going to update about everything I bought as it gets eaten until someone tells me to stop.

Has anyone tried the Aldi chocolate bombe? They've got them in the Xmas stuff and I really fancy one instead of Xmas pudding which I'm not keen on but font want to get it if they're horrible. Have also seen a chocolate pudding in Tesco which is slightly more expensive at £2 but the Aldi one looks more luxurious. Might have to get one to try in advance . Was thinking of serving with double cream.

Bit sad they are starting to do ready meals and other crap in aldi. I'm sure this will push prices up overall .

On the upside Xmas stuff us in. Black forest stollen is Fabulous.

bacon you're right, there was a number of things that I couldn't get that are staples in our house, beans and pulses were one, root ginger was another. I would still have to shop in more than one place, being able to go to just one shop is a joy that I shall have to forgo for a while. It's surprising how quickly you get used to what the store you use does stock and sort of plan your meals around it though. (Recently moved back from overseas and shopped in different stores to get everything needed it just becomes a habit)

I can however also say that Aldi corner yogurts are not as nice as muller ones. (they are a treat for us and we only buy them when on bogof and that will continue to be the case.)

I also never liked Lidl ham (but that could have been the German pigs) or their ice cream, but bog standard Sainsbos is fine.

I still think its difficult to compare like for like. It would depend on the ingredients, its provenance, quality, size etc. Compare sausage rolls for instance you want to read the ingredients and % meat first. Again apples in aldi are horrendous so I have to buy better apples from main supermarkets as everyone complains and they dont get eaten.

I do on the occassion shop at aldi - say olive oil, some veg, squash odd bits but when I shop I go for quality and my bill can be fairly similar to a small shop at Sainsbos.

I agree the cereals are good but the box sizes are tiny and no good for us for the price per 100g is it comparable to a family size of say weetabix which is pretty cheap in Sainbos? Again 1kg own brand sainsbo cornflakes again cheap.

You do spend more at major supermarkets as thats how they work, magazines, endless fruit and veg, homewear, clothing, isles of utter sh"t food etc.

I once bought a frozen pack of salmon portions in Aldi, they were cheap but the portion size was so small and needed the whole packet to feed 3! so not good value. Other disappointing items include bin bags (thin and hopeless), some veg isnt dated so you dont know how long they've been hanging around, baby tomatoes, jam (too thin for us), instant coffee (revolting), chocolate (some good for cooking but far from pleasant).

Good - cereals, oilve oil & quality balsamic, main veg, some salads, cheese, milk, yogurts, tinned fish, washing powder, dishwasher, squash, apple juice, some wines, baking bags of nuts, face creams & hygiene stuff.

You still have to shop at the major supermarkets anyway so you cant really say you will say 20% over the year. The shop is very limited ie you cant get tinned pulses, gravy browning, baking ingredients, wholemeal pasta, brown rice, herbs & spices, decent tea & coffee, certain cereals, quality stock cubes, specialist tinned and deli products.

Got to say I hate Asda, for the experience and quality of some produce.

I was told by a reliable source that Aldi cereals are made by Nstle, crisps by Walkers and their probiotic yoghurts by Activia so I decided to test it out and indeed, all these products tasted exactly the same as the dearer brands. I am now a convert.
Would recommend their eggs, free range British chicken breasts, parma ham, cereal bars (just like yoghurt coated Go Ahead), chutney and the 100% breast chicken dippers (tasted like Birdseye, with no complaints from DC or their friends). Have also heard great things about the washing powder and dishwashers tablets too.

Well I've just compared my first ever Aldi shop with Sainsbury's which is where I'd usually shop. Everything I bought in Aldi was cheaper than in Sainsbury's (apart from nice cherry tomatoes) and this is comparing with their basics range which is what I usually buy. I can say already that Aldi iced Doughnuts are not up to scratch and are only 1p cheaper than Sainsbury's but their seeded bread is delicious and about 25p cheaper.
Overall the Aldi shop was £79.06 and Sainsbury's £102.10
An overall saving of around 20% can't be bad when continued over the year. My average bill at the moment is at least £100 a week and probably more like £120 a 20% saving would be around £1000 (which was our summer holiday bill last year) a year just for shopping in a different store most of the time.
I hope the quality is up to it because whilst I'm happy to buy budget it has to be tasty enough.

my fussy puss cats won't touch any of aldi's "wet"cat food but adore the £1.99 packets of dry cat biscuits, i have previously tried every other biscuits and they would only eat the very expensive "james wellbeloved", i even wonder if james w.b manufacture them for aldi as they are idendtical!

I go to aldi to but my cleaning products. I think their w5 cleaning r much better than the top of the range brands and so much cheaper. Like their bleach much cheaper.

It's fine and dandy if you have an Aldi anywhere near you...our closest one is Elephant and Castle so the money to pay for travel and the general extra couple of hours of travel etc....would offset any financial gain....

DW recently swapped from shopping online at Tesco's to doing an Asda order and didn't really think it was any cheaper.....of course their price guarantee thingy begged to differ but she wasn't convinced and neither was I...

I personally think that unless you have an Aldi nearby you need to shop at different supermarkets for different things to ensure you take advantage of offers.....DW thinks that Morrisons is overall cheaper on fruit and veg but not for other store cupboard staples....

I just did the my supermarket comparison basket at Aldi was £32 all the otehr supermarkets were £42-57

Am off to twiddle with sainsburys offers to see if I can make it cheaper because I'm surprised Sainsubrys was £52

I'm told by DS today that the fake Aldi Magnums are not as good as the fake Sainsburys ones. Mind you its the first thing that he hasn't prefered the aldi version. I spent £85 today mind you that did include Xmas and birthday presents...

Ocado - are you kidding!! Couldn't afford to shop there even if I wanted to!! I got a family to feed and they know how to eat!! Aldi all the way for me and then a little shop at Lidl and then I hit Asda or Tesco's for the rest!!

I agree with fossil that my supermarket favours the Supermarket you first fill your basket from, so I don't think the comparisons are necessarily that accurate. I do like Aldi though and I think they are generally cheaper. The only thing I've bought from Aldi which I have thought was truly horrible is the houmous. yeuch!
