Who is getting richer?

Forgetmenot157 · 29/10/2020 19:47

During the massive economic crash the world is heading towards.. who benefits? I know nothing about economics so generally just wandering this.

What I mean is that money just doesn't disappear so everyone, every company and country is poorer. Somewhere along the line someone must be much richer to make everyone else poorer? When I say everyone else I'm talking countries not individuals.

Or is that the point that in fact there isn't many people benifitting and just the money is staying still. Which is why they predict a fast bounce back once restrictions are lifted?

I may sound like an idiot, I just didn't have a clue.

The rich
Fucking consultants - the govt has paid out billions during this shit show without any success e.g. Track & Trace, ditto Dido Harding
Big pharma
Companies who were able to convince the govt they could deliver PPE etc without any ability to do so
Any company who has been able to switch or already had most of their trade via online sales
Most Tech companies - not many people had even heard of Zoom before the pandemic
All the people who submitted false claims for govt assistance

Anyone who normally commutes and has been working from home will almost certainly be better off but that's not actually getting rich. Likewise no holidays, reduced clothing purchases, less eating out etc will improve your finances but probably just temporarily.

My business has doubled over the last six months. I've employed two members of staff. The economy isn't as dire as you think, it's just shifted. I know of lots of people who are online retailers who are doing extremely well now. It isn't just the big companies stacking up the gold and that gives me hope that we'll all be okay in the end.

I think those who sell thermal underwear and base layers might do well this winter, if people spend more time outside and in places with open windows.

@Stellaris22

Is that really what you are taking from that? 'It's not illegal so it's ok'.

Wow.

Do you boycott every firm, business or self employed person who may use the system legally to pay minimum tax?

@Stellaris22 they pay all the tax the have to - again I think you are confused.

The rich get richer whatever happens because they often have several income streams.
Supermarkets must have made a fortune.
Also toilet roll and paracetamol manufacturers.
We usually spend a lot on holidays, days out, festivals, rallies, concerts, nights out etc. We've saved a few thousand by now but we'd much rather do those things tbh.
Over lock down we also saved on fuel, bought barely any new clothes but did spend a bit on the house.

It's fairly well known that Amazon do not pay full tax, I'm frankly amazed it has to be pointed out www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/business/2019/dec/02/new-study-deems-amazon-worst-for-aggressive-tax-avoidance

@notdawn

Don’t understand the hate towards billionaires.

Personally, I think the wealth gap is our biggest social issue, nationally and globally. I'm all for people having the opportunity to become rich through enterprise and risk taking but the balance is wrong. Far too much wealth being accrued by the few whilst countless millions can't afford the very basics. It's easy to say hate the game not the players and that companies like Amazon are just playing by the rules that others have written. However, there is a difference between legal and ethical - just because you can do something doesn't make it right. Add to that, powerful corporations and wealthy individuals put a lot of effort into ensuring that the rules of the game are written to their best advantage.

I don’t get the Amazon tax thing. Presumably they have good accountants who know what they are doing re tax so no dodging going on.

Me, NHS doctor, my outgoings are hugely reduced, our trust has given us 2 one off payments for our hard work over the last few months and a payrise of 3%. I am saving about 2k a month. I am lucky I have a "desk speciality" and mostly WFH with 1 face to face outpatient clinic a week.

It's still fucking miserable I miss my patients, I miss my colleagues, I miss my holidays. I am working so hard to give a substandard service. I would give every penny I've earnt this year to live 2 weeks in 2019. Sad

Bloody hell where do you work? I’ve not had a penny. Or a pay rise.

But I must also add that I do not think the rich are enemies. Big companies must help communities and be ethical and pay taxes. Help to educate and train communities so that people can progress.

I grew up in a country where the basics healthcare, education and low income housing are provided. This should have helped to get people out of poverty but it doesn’t there are still lots of poor people.

I do think they should yes. Actually, it is a big problem with tech companies but I can’t deny I am happy Amazon makes my life easier and have given jobs to people would be otherwise unemployed.

It's actually the Sunday Times Giving List, but it's behind a paywall. Stormzy's on the list, as are footballers and musicians. I wouldn't necessarily put them in the executive corporate classes, maybe the Guardian would like to comment.
