Covid

Do you think we will all start to return to normal June 1st?

I work in non essential retail. My employer looks to be opening June 1st. My child is not in one of the school years returning at the moment. Dh’s work associated with retail but going into people’s homes in a customer service facility. They look like they are aiming for June 1st too.
Some colleagues have said they feel we will head for more weeks of lockdown after the R rating increased. I understand the 5 (Nando!) chart but can we reopen everything at the current 4 scale?

Not much chance of that if the hyperbolic raving on this board today is anything to go by.

I think the lockdown is fraying round the edges. It’s noticeably busier outside. Despite what you read on mumsnet, most people don’t want to stay indoors for two years, (only opening the door for essential food deliveries and carefully bleaching every item).

@bellinisurge

We’re not opening at the same time?

At the OP is clearly going off the info we’ve been given.

My work (education) is planning to maintain social distancing well into the next academic year. This means staff and students will probably attend on a part time rota. So for me, no. Not life as normal. As long as we're social distancing lots of things will be limited and I haven't heard anyone suggest social distancing will finish June 1

The numbers of deaths have decreased really sharply. The latest ONS deaths for 1-8th May were at the normal level for January. As deaths are indicative of infections 3 weeks ago, that suggests that infections must have dropped really sharply. With that continuing

I hazard a guess that since people seemed to take Boris’s speech on the 10th as meaning lockdown was over, it won’t continue and we may well see a sharp rise of infections next week and the week after.

It will be interesting to see what’s happening with the Track and Trace.

Hopefully... but as your title says it will be the “start” of getting back to normal rather than actually getting back to normal. Hopefully the summer weather will kill back Covid like it does what the flu, and by the time we get to August it will be a minor threat. Like flu, i think it will probably survive though and come back later in the autumn.

Yes it does seem that 1June will be the big day. In my own small world the environmental agency opening up the waterways they manage them so feels like life is getting back to normal .

It's time to start getting everything opened up over the next month or two (June/July) that can reasonably operate social distancing.

@bellinisurge shops and restaurants are opening now across much of Europe so it makes sense to think we might follow in a few weeks.

There will be social distancing on 1st June but I think during June we'll see some changes.

Yes I do. I think we have to. We can’t live like this until a vaccine is available.

We went into lockdown later than the rest of Europe. Why do you think we should be reopening at the same time?

Report
bellinisurge · 19/05/2020 17:23

No. If "normal " means no social distancing and everywhere open.

I think so judging by how other countries are doing. The sticking point will be schools as many parents will struggle to return to the workplace if schools are still shut for most kids.

Where I live i hope the small shops can reopen. Perfectly possible to only allow one customer in at a time.

Doubt it though Grin

As deaths are indicative of infections 3 weeks ago, that suggests that infections must have dropped really sharply. With that continuing, we should be ready to open on 1 June. And there should be contact tracing in place then too to keep things under control

I think non-essential retail would be a good area to open up.

But I think it really does need to be phased quite carefully, so if something does lead to a definitive spike, we know what measure that was. It'll help with future containment restrictions.

I bloomin hope so 🙏 Lots of people are going against the 'restrictions' now anyway. I feel its sort of naturally coming to an end with tolerance wearing thin.

With the lockdown, it is dependant on the R rating but numbers of deaths look to be decreasing. At what point does each of the 5 stages need the R to be? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
