Furlough..when will it end?

Just that really, I’ve been reading numerous reports that Rishi is going to soon stop furlough or ask people to work part time! I’m currently on furlough..I’m a nursery worker and I’m worried about the next announcement on Tuesday, I believe? I understand that furlough can’t go on indefinitely and I am looking forward to returning to work, my question i suppose is can he just cut it or do you think it will be phased out? I know nobody can give a definitive answer, maybe Boris’ announcements tonight may shed some clues on this!

Dh is in the same position. The reason I would start looking now is because there are so few out there, especially when you are having to look for a job that isn't in the sector you normally work in.

It's an awful position to be in.

@Rainbow12e

How big is the company? Bigger companys will hopefully have the funds to do that, smaller ones it's less likely. Is that the only thing the company do? If they do more than one thing (such as working online too) then that increases the chances. Small family run pub, then I would be considering starting to look for another job, you can work for some one else while on furlough.

@BrieAndChilli I’m in the Congress industry too, and currently furloughed. I’m really really worried about my job when furlough ends

It's a big concern of mine. I'm on furlough. Technically my workplace can reopen and is doing so tomorrow but we manufacture goods for high street retailers so while the shops are closed we're only taking about 30% of our usual number of orders. If there's still not enough work for me to go back at the end of June and furlough ends then I'll lose my job. Stressful.

I would imagine it will continue for those who cannot work due to government restrictions but not for the companies and employees that can reopen but are using furlough because work has dried up but not because they can’t open.

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat, yes my partner is self employed and he’s had no work since this has started..! It’ll be interesting to see what happens!

Unfortunately I think there is going to be a horrible number of redundancies when the furlough scheme ends and not all employers can continue to employ some or all of the employees.

Report
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/05/2020 16:59

Since the self employed scheme wasn’t extended when the employed scheme was, I’m worried. Forcibly closed by the gov, and no income will be disastrous.

@kimlo
I think you’re right with that!

@MaxNormal I hope we all get answers soon! It’s hard isn’t it as you say I’m so grateful for the furlough scheme but looking forward to returning to work!

Current scheme ends on 30th June.
Likely to be extended but MUCH less generous into July
and then even tighter in August
and end completely in September

Not seen anything that more people are going back to work next week. Would take time for employers to set up social distancing etc

@BrieAndChilli I though the same, but spoke to an accountant friend and he said the problem with trying to limit furlough to certain industries (as with any benefit etc) is it becomes more expensive to administer. Also what do you do with businesses that are directly linked, but support? Very difficult to say what is a “hospitality business”.

I wonder if there may be a combination to reducing (60 per cent and cap at 2k) and also a job subsidy scheme - take your workers off furlough and they will pay 50 per cent of wages up to say 1.5k (although if they do that there is a risk companies will furlough people in June to then put them on the subsidy scheme).

@Samcj02 I think that the people who can use early years settings will start to widen, but I don't think it will be from next week. More probably when the schools start to open up. Possibly they might let the 4 year olds go to help with the transition to school.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 10/05/2020 16:29

If schools need 3 weeks notice to open I assume that nurseries would need time to make contingency plans and buy in hand gel etc

Report
MaxNormal · 10/05/2020 16:28

@Samcj02 honestly it's an awful situation. The furlough doesn't nearly cover usual earnings for various reasons but it's obviously better than bugger all.
I really hope that they'll extend it for certain sectors that plainly can't re-open yet. They'll kill off those industries if they don't.
