Never going back to normal

Do people genuinely think this? The amount of posts I’ve read saying that things will never go back to normal again. I’m honestly interested.

But yes there will be a new brighter and better normal than what we see today and if enough people wants something- pubs, theatres, holidays then they will happen again humans change and evolve this may forever be seen as the end of one era (as the Second World War was) but that does not mean the end of anything good and positive, I am sure if of that!

I like ✔ your post @Qasd

Never is a big statement. I would imagine people at the end of WW2 would have said the same. Humans find a way. However I agree it won’t be normal for some time and I am also concerned about how the US and China will have any sort of relationship going forward. Trumps rhetoric towards China is ramping up which concerns me.

I for one hate doing one big shop a week. I just don't know what to get for so many meals and some food goes bad before I can get to it.

Before I shopped on foot pretty much every day in my way home from work and just bought what I wanted that day or for the next. Far less waste.

Normal is a changing concept, it wasn’t normal to write random messages on my phone to strangers on the internet even I was young😂!

Swine flu wasn't eradicated - the pandemic ended, but now it's one of the seasonal flu viruses that go round.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/swine-flu/

There may be some permanent changes to how we behave and interact, if we all have to have a couple of years of social distancing.

Once, running water to every home must have seemed like a big ask, and doctors washing their hands before seeing patients must have seemed like a bit of a faff, but we've stuck with both habits.

Cheap flights and annual foreign holidays - for those that used to take them - may be gone for ever

However, most other things should resume after widespread vaccination
That's looking ahead 2 years though, maybe more

I think things won’t be normal for the rest of this year anyway in terms of social distancing etc.

But I think how people view things will have changed for a long time. For example I’m due a baby in September and I wouldn’t have thought twice about a family member wanting to hold a newborn but that won’t happen at all now.

Maybe in positive ways too. Maybe we’ll all be a bit cleaner. Might see an end to pointless presenteeism in workplaces thus less traffic etc. Buying smart and local rather than pointless tat. More appreciation for ‘unskilled’ work eg in supermarkets etc. It’s still work. I don’t know.

A vaccine will take a while to develop.
I still have faith though!

Apologies - they said it on the news, I didn't mean to be difficult, or make any unreasonable predictions. I don't think "it'll be a while" is unreasonable.

I think they meant a completely new vaccine - there were already existing flu vaccines to build on, but there are no coronavirus vaccines.

Someone here will no more than me, I'm sure.

EYProvider · 28/04/2020 19:36

@Singingatmidnight - A vaccine for swine flu was available within about four months and it completely eradicated the disease.

You must work for the media, making a dramatic, doom laden prediction like that.

I dont think we will ever be so carefree again. Hopefully the U.K will become a cleaner place, having lived in many countries i can honestly say the UK is pretty manky. May be we will value our lives and those that important a bit more and not waste time on vapid celebs and useless tat

There is no guarantee that there will be a vaccine. There isn't for HIV or Ebola or others.

There is a vaccine for Ebola.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RVSV-ZEBOV_vaccine

Parallels could be drawn re: accelerated trials on humans and starting with something that had been 'on the stocks' for a while (drug companies are utilizing knowledge from SARS and MERS)

HIV is also now a manageable chronic condition - though it took a couple of decades to get there.

I thought there was a vaccine for Ebola?

I don't think it will cause as big a social change as the World Wars - they lasted a lot longer. The 1918 pandemic is probably a better comparison and as a PP said that was followed by the decadent 20s.

I think there will be changes but not enough to say it will be a new normal in the long term.

Report
Singingatmidnight · 28/04/2020 18:59

The current world record for the fastest vaccine ever is something like four years.

This is not going to be forever, but it will probably be a while.

They are putting no dodgy vaccine in me thanks

Well, if you mean will things go back to the way they were before, then no. But we will find a new normal. That's what people do.

Noooblerooble · 28/04/2020 18:25

The most likely outcome is that there will be a vaccine. By far.

Perhaps, although the incentive for a vaccine is far greater given covid’s behaviour.

Even without a vaccine treatments will become more focussed and better as the science and medical community learn more about it.

Working on the assumption that there’s no reason to think this virus won’t behave like other know viruses and actually become milder with mutations over time it’s perfectly possible it’ll fade on its own with time and join the ranks of chicken pox.

There is no guarantee that there will be a vaccine. There isn't for HIV or Ebola or others.

But things will get back to normal - it just won't be the same. There have always been big events. The war with France in the 1800's, the other wars, the spanish flu, HIV, 9/11, Wall Street Crash, Depression, the winter of discontent, genocides, the boxing day Tsunami.. Some affecting the world, some affecting just one country. And eventually all these country move on, most people will live life again and others will have been lost along the way.

And all we can do is hang on in their for the ride and do our best to be part of the moving forward.

infernotowering · 28/04/2020 17:52

I think there will be a new normal in the short term until there is a vaccine. After that point, there will be societal and behavioural shifts that won't go back to normal - there always is after pandemics. But it won't be EVERYTHING that doesn't go back to normal.
