OPK used as pregnancy test

Hi there, I am am currently 9/10 DPO and I have been tracking my ovulation with OPKs.

I began tracking on 11th and getting my peak 16/17th which was confirmed by W clear blue. No smileys after the 17th. I carried on tracking my ovulation just to see how it tailed off. From 20th up until 24th there was basically no test line at all - nothing to see and today I have tested again as I have heard they can be used to pick up the pregnancy hormone if you are in fact pregnant. Just out of curiosity, I have done two and the test line has got stronger. It's definitely there. I am hoping I am pregnant this month and have ordered a FRER however could this be picking something up 9/10DPO?

X

I was really interested in this as well and was always trying to read into the results of my LH so tested daily throughout my entire cycle out of curiosity and happened to become pregnant this cycle.

For me, the LH peak midcycle was clear and definitely accurate as we only BD around that time this month. I did have one other mini surge at 6dpo for some reason but the line was not as dark as when I actually ovulated. On the other days that I tested, the line would sometimes be barely visible and other times more visible but definitely not as dark or darker than the control.

I think I probably implanted at around 8-9 dpo and at 10dpo I had a positive test with frer. At this point my LH tests were still not any different from how they had been throughout the rest of my cycle so the frer was definitely more sensitive and picked up the pregnancy first. The cheap hcg strips were also still negative at 10dpo.

The cheap hcg strips and the LH tests did not really begin to show clear pregnancy results until very near to the time AF was due. At this time I did then get a line on the cheap hcg strip and the LH test line then became unusually dark and much darker than it ever was before I was pregnant, including just before ovulation. It is now much darker and much thicker than the control line. I have read that LH is similar in composition to hcg, and the strips cannot differentiate so react to the hcg as well as LH and will become extra dark in pregnancy.

My conclusion was that the LH strips accurately predicted ovulation and then the results varied throughout the rest of my cycle in ways that didn't have anything to do with pregnancy until well into the time that even the cheap pregnancy tests were showing a positive result. They don't tell you anything useful any earlier than a pregnancy test, and if you use a good, sensitive test (eg frer) they will tell you before there is any real indication on the LH strip.

Hello, was it positive? So interesting it’s worked for a few of you

@RizzleRazzle hi yes I know I am holding it with my left hand - today's line was stronger a lot quicker so we shall see either way soon. Thank you x

@FayLivvie

This is what I'm getting on an opk. Maybe I'm just over thinking everything. Time will tell! X

This is upside down, the test line is actually quite faint so I wouldn't call it a positive OPK and LH can fluctuate throughout your cycle anyway.

A pregnancy test is the best way to find out, hope your FRER arrives soon OP, good luck!x
@FayLivvie This is how I found out I was pregnant this week, I was testing lh and it just kept getting darker each day,I done a hcg test Tuesday at 11dpo and it came back positive so I got. First response and the line was bold! I used an opk this morning at 16dpo just to check my lines are getting darker.

So yes if lines keep getting darker daily I would get a pregnancy test!!
Ah that's great news so pleased for you! Thanks for your reply. My line is definitely darker today and came back a lot sooner so here's hoping 🤞 although no symptoms as yet! All the best with your pregnancy x

I will say though that I also don't feel pregnant at all so I definitely wouldn't use that as indication! Haha

I think it can be if blazing positive across a few days, but can also be within the normal variation of your LH range whether you are pregnant or not if it's just a quick spike. I had a pretty strong positive opk at 5dpo for about 12 hours and then it slowly faded over the next 24-48 hours down to almost nothing. I tried a frer and it was negative.

I then got a frer bfp yesterday at 10dpo. My LH tests are still pretty light, so I don't think the 5-6dpo surge was related to pregnancy as I wouldn't have even implanted at that point. If you are pregnant, the frer results will outweigh any LH tests I think.

@Hopefulhedgehog

That doesn't look like a positive OPK to me. Get yourself an FRER and find out for sure!

Weirdly I've just done a another opk (ridiculous I know!) as FRER isn't coming til tonight..And the lines are both now as dark as each other. I don't feel pregnant at all. No sore boobs - the only thing I could say is I've developed a cold out of nowhere. I suppose I will find out later! 🤣 I am around 10/11 DPO x

That was taken about 7 this morning - unfortunately had to get up for a wee about 3.45am! It seems slightly darker than yesterday's line. I will try a FRER either today or tomorrow morning but possibly getting my hopes up.

Worked for me too. I thought I'd keep using the sticks just to see what my cycle does, and had ovulation confirmed earlier that month. One morning I did another opk and had crazy lines and thought wtf. Grin Did a pregnancy test and it was positive. I was so confused because I'd never heard of opks picking up pregnancy hormones.

I think it's a sign if it's a blazing positive. As I understand it, your levels of lh vary naturally during your cycle so tests can pick it up even when it's not your surge and it doesn't necessarily mean you're pregnant, it could just be lh. If it turns blazing positive then you maybe onto a winner!

@2020iscancelled

Yup, worked for me. I was probably 12 DPO, I randomly tested my temp when I woke up as I’d expected it to have dropped as I had a short LP and thought my period would be due that day.

My temp hadn’t come down at all so that piqued my interest. I didn’t have any tests to hand so I used a OPK. Big strong line.

I drove to the shop at breakneck speed in my pjs and a hoody and bought 3 tests. BFP on all of them.

That little line is nearly 3 now Grin

Ah absolutely love hearing people's stories! Best news ever isn't it.
I have two already however never tracked with either of them. Can't believe how tricky it can be to get it right. Can't wait for my BFP if I ever get another chance.
These replies are great to hear x

@CaptainSpirit

This worked for me twice! My last baby I had no idea where I was in my cycle, took a OPK and assumed I was ovulating - it was only when I got six days worth of blazing positive OPKs in a row that I suspected something was up, took a pregnancy test and now I have DD2. Smile

The second time it worked I was 13dpo and had no pregnancy tests in the house so decided to use a leftover OPK. Again it was really dark and the day after I got my BFP on a pregnancy test! Now 13 weeks exactly.

Good luck OP, in my experience they can definitely detect a pregnancy! 🤞🏻

Wow that's amazing. Congratulations! 😍
I am about 9/10 DPO not sure which exactly but have got two lines on each opk. Not quite blazing yet! I've ordered a FRER so fingers crossed xx
