Falling pregnant with the mirena coil????

Hi Everyone

Im new here.. have a bit of a dilemma.

Am on my second Mirena coil, had the first one put in 2001 after the birth of my daughter.. It was taken out in Feb this year as i developed PID from it. Had severe periods until i convinced my GP to put another one in 9 weeks ago.

Had my period 3 weeks after having it put in which was as normal as ever as it takes me about 6 months for it to cut the bleeding down.

Had my second period or what ever was of it.. on the 1st September (i have a 21 day cycle)but it was more like spotting then had 2 days of bleeding which wasn't even worth the energy as it wasn't really anything and came off after a bit more spotting.

Have no idea if this is anything to do with it but i had a coughing fit 2 weeks ago and the pain in my stomach was so intense i couldnt move and felt like i was being stabbed for a week after!!

I Have been experiencing severe exhaustion and constant nausea and a cross between diaorrhea and constipation for 2 weeks now and am getting really fed up with it. I went to my GP's at the beginning of the week and was told that i should take a pg test to be on the safe side. Told the gp id have to wait as with my daughter it didnt show up until 3 weeks after my period was due.

Has anyone else had these symptoms with the mirena and actually ended up pregnant as i dont think im that unlucky to be the 1%??

Hi I had the marina coil in for 4 years!

I started to feel sick and dizzy and didn’t know what it was so I rang the doctors and told him and he said to do a pg test to make sure to rule it out and it was positive I had to then go to the hospital for an emergency scan and get the coil removed..

I had my second mirena coil fitted last year May and have never been pregnant. I'm 25 and don't have any kiddies. It's completely normal to have pain after your coil has been inserted and you may experience severe cramps and discomfort for 2 days. The coil takes a few months to settle and for the hormones to start working. I have problems with my right ovary and have had cysts with both coils. Apparently women with the mirena tend to get bigger cysts then women who don't. My previous coil got stuck and I needed to have it removed as I had it for 5 years. They injected me on the inside and used different methods to remove it but I still had a new one fitted as it's the only thing that works for me. I have had so many pregnancy symptoms over the past 6 years and in the end it all came down to cysts or my hormones. You need to remember that your body thinks it's pregnant for the 5 years you have it so if you do think you are pregnant or you feel really unwell just go see a doctor. Hope this helped. I know you posted this last year so you might have removed your coil by now. Everyone is different and you just need to find what's good for you. I have experienced cysts in the first year of my coil fitting so the first year is always a bugger. As to why they move I don't know but it's always good to get a regular check up to make sure it's in the right place.

Hi there,

I've had my coil in for just over 4years.. I have tried most contraceptives but nothing seemed to agree with me until this, 3 different pills that I couldn't keep down, injection with was terrible depression and cyst on my ovaries, implant which gave me non stop bleeding and condoms gave me infections.. This has been a nonstop trial for over 10 years.. They have slightly worked seeing as I don't have any children so I try not complain too much - however getting back to my point.. Coil in 4 years and not one period, not any problems until recently I've been having stomach cramps (2weeks) and I strangly had a full blood period with horrendous pain.. I called the out of hours doctors and they don't really help too much.. Just told me to use condoms that don't have the latex on...... This hasn't really helped me.. Just wondering if anybody has experienced the same and if so what is it.. I'm due for a smear test, should I get then to look or do they do that anyway? Sorry about the long message. X

Hi,

I've had my coil since February last year. I've been having pains since about June. I've been back to my local clinic about 2-3 times a month and they pass me around then tell me to wait a couple of months and see how it goes. I miscarried 2 years ago, and kinda still remember what it felt like to be pregnant, I'm having all these same feelings I did last time, except I have really sharp shooting pains. Finally after a year of the pain my GP has agreed to remove it, as I have picked up countless infections since having it put in, I've had one partner since having it in, and we're both loyal and haven't cheated, unfortunately the GP doesn't know what the problem is, and there is no way of checking whether it is the coil causing the pain until it is removed! Reading through all the comments, I've seen that this problem is common! Both me and my partner are too young to have a child, but could it be the hormones that is causing the problem?

Any help would be great! Thanks.

Hi, I'm new here to!
And I with I had done my research before having my marina coil fitted, it was fitted on 14 sept, x2 periods later on a regular 28 day cycle, I have found out I am pregnant. To say that I am not impressed does not cover it, as I have a 5 month old now.
I have been scanned, prodded, poked and operated on due to the hospital thinking it was ectopic an the coil has been removed, but found nothing. But then they still can not locate the pregnancy. However I am feeling slightly upset, my hospital seem to be pleased for me that I am pregnant, like I was planning it on the coil!? My husband an I are not against keeping or terminating the pregnancy, but we want to know the risks for both options, can anyone advise?
Many thanks

Hi I'm new to this... I've not been pg before however I've been on the merina coil since march 2011, and at first it was great i didnt get periods or if i did they were fine but recently I've started gaining weight, my breasts are noticeably bigger and have been sore, I feel sick but haven't thrown up, I get pains in my stomach and sides and have very irregular spotting and i never have a regular period, also I get quite a lot of headaches and been getting mood swings lately oh and another thing is I sometimes have shooting pains during sex and recently found that sex seems to cause spotting.... I'm getting quite concerned and was wondering if anyone has had any of this and what to do ?? :s thanks

Try not to worry but get yourself a test tomorrow. Once you know you can take it from there. It would be unlucky. Fingers crossed for you.

am 18 years old and in a healthy relationship i had the coil fitted 10th may 2012. waited 2-3 weeks like my doc said to have sex. me and my boyfriend had sex and now weird things are happening and I'm worried i maybe pregnant. i did fall pregnant 2 years ago and miscarried and i am feeling how i felt couple of years ago. my doc said i should come on my period like normal first couple of months with the coil. i haven't come on yet. i am having cramps back ache my breasts are sore and I'm tired and tonight i just just had diarrhoea but it was just once. my boyfriend keeps saying that I'm not pregnant and just over worrying but I'm scared to tell my mum just incase she tells me I'm being stupid as she has had the coil twice now and hasn't fallen pregnant. I'm starting to worry now as i really don't want to be pregnant! i know pregnancy can happen on the coil and can be dangerous but can someone please tell me I'm just over reacting!

Do a pregnancy test in the morning with first wee. If neg and you still cannot feel the threads book appt to see nurse / Dr so they can have a look. Dr do not need to check mirena is in after it has been inserted. Every women who has one should check for the thread as soon as period has finished every single month. They can come out with the flow and can move. Good luck
