Conception

If you were on the pill for 10+ years did it take you a long time to conceive?

I have been on pill since 15/16 and am now 28.

DH and I are planning on TTC mid year.

But I'm worried that having been on the pill for so long is going to mean it will take a long time.

Was this the case for you?

Loving reading the stories on this thread. I came off in October last year after being on various pills for about 10 years. Had 3 AFs but they've been all over the place so really hoping they settle down soon and I get my BFP!

No I was pregnant the first ovulation after stopping the pill. I had been on the pill for 13 years :-)

I'm coming off implant tomorrow. It'll be ten years since using any hormonal contraceptive. DH and I are planning to ttc on September. ..wanted to get my body back to normal first! Smile

I was on the pill aged 16 to 27, I did come off of it about 6 months before we tried to get pregnant (used condoms in the meantime) and fell pregnant with DS on the first month of trying. I then went back on the pill and came off it and again got pregnant on the first month of trying.

I was on the combined pill from 16-20, and the progesterone only pill for the following 13 years. I stopped taking my pill at the end of October last year, had my first period a month later, and got BFP today! So that's roughly 4 cycles. Good luck!

Nope! Thankfully (I've had some other issues- a blood condition that caused some losses before diagnosis) I always conceive within 3 months!

One word of warning - coming off made me bleed after dtd. Scary! Always get this checked out, but in my case it was 'cervical erosion', a harmless condition common after sudden hormone shifts (e.g. pregnancy, coming off/going onto a new pill).

I was wondering the same thing as Beaverfeaver. Do you think it varies depending what pill you were on?

Report
Foxred10 · 24/03/2014 17:09

Nope , on it for 11 years (14-25) and took one month Smile

The doctors say there is no effect on fertility, but if you've been on the pill for a long time it may take a little while for your period to return. But if it takes more than 6 months, go see the GP. The pill can mask underlying fertility problems, such as pcos, but it doesn't create them. If you stop the pill a few months before you want to ttc chances are you will get your cycle back in time for when you're ready. Also, it is not true that you are most fertile just after stopping!

It took me 9 months to get my first period after stopping the pill. I'd been taking it for 20 years. My periods were so erratic after that that I was 17 weeks pregnant before I realised!

Was on dianette and then Yasmin from 15-34... Conceived straight away much to my surprise hence our son being born the day after Boxing Day as opposed to sometime this year!! Good luck :)

Nope, got pg before my first real period after 14 years on various pills.

Have been off the pill since DD was born 2 years ago, taking aaaages to get pg again.

Can't help but wonder whether the pill helped with fertility...

Took Microgynon from 16-27, TTC 19 months and still trying. On waiting list for assisted conception.

No. Took ovranette from 17-31 and was pg as soon as I came off it , never went back on and next time I TTC was pg straight away.

Vindicated in taking pill for all those years and Shock about all the times I was cavalier about taking it!
