Adult board game suggestions

Can anyone suggest some good board games for adults or even games for the Wii (not dance ones)?

Having a few friends round on Christmas day night and fancy something we can all play instead of just sitting there getting drunk, don't mind getting drunk whilst playing said board game though

It's quite a simple basic idea. The board has stations linked by "rails". You draw tickets and you have to get from A to B using train cards of different colours.

It's simple enough for older DCs to understand but has a lot of subtlety when played just by adults. There is an element of luck, which I think is important in games.

I had never heard of ticket to ride until this thread. I quickly googled and the game play summary isn't very exciting. It seems very complicated, about trains? What am I missing? Why is it so good?

Once you've played Ticket to Ride there is no going back. We have all the boards and play obsessively.

The newest one Rails and Sails is fabulous.

We love Pandemic here! It is very strategic but I really like that you are working together rather than competing.

Flashpoint is a great cooperative game.

Hate Pandemic, its just evil and difficult!

Really really want Cards Against Humanity but they don't sell it in shops over here so need to order it - have begged OH to order it for Christmas.

I love playing cards against humanity. You need a few to play and it helps if your having a few drinks.
I wouldn't play with anybody I consider prudish or old fashioned but I haven't played with anybody who hasn't been crying with laughter.

Flux is fun because how close you are to winning constantly changes!!!

Carcassonne.

Has edged Ticket to Ride into 2nd place in this house, but only just.

Marking place.

I need something funny and easy to play. Have already got Articulate and Cards Against Humanity so would like something similar. Nothing strategic.

Pandemic is great if you've got a group of four or so - it's an apocalypse scenario and you all work together to stop plagues spreading across the globe. As it's co-operative, it's a good option if you have 'that' friend who either gets hypercompetitive or sulks hideously when they lose.

On the other hand, if you want to start a fight, I recommend the Really Nasty Horse Racing Game. I love it Grin

Some great suggestions, thanks everyone. I can't believe how expensive some board games are now. Goes to show how long it is since I bought one, I think the last one I got was from Woolies.

Oh you bad bad people. I stumbled across this thread. And have just ordered exploding kittens. And blankr.

So unnecessary shopping but that's Christmas sorted.

So many great board games out there. Current faves are Kingdom Builder, Carcassonne, Isle of Skye, Seven Wonders, Qin and Rakpoka (scrabble but with poker hands instead of words)

TwentyCups · 12/11/2016 15:44

Bananagrams - it's s faster fun version of scrabble in a way. Games are quick and don't stagnate!
