it has been invaluable, tbh. there are too many uses to be able to list them.

a (slightly) unfortunate side effect is that dd2 (and later, ds - he is only 16 weeks atm!) has felt a 'need' for an ipad/ipod touch much earlier than we woudl otherwise have introduced ehr to one. but even so, the gains dd1 has made far outweigh the (potential, and i don't really think this anyway) drawbacks of dd2 having (to all intents and purposes - it is mine, but she has free use of it) an ipod touch at age 5.

mine are getting ipod touch for Xmas they are 8 and 7.. I have resisted as long as I could but they just want them for the music as much as anything else.

DD was two when we got her, her iPod touch, she also has access to the family iPad.

Loops - dd1 has severe ASD, and uses her ipad at school. she has learnt to read and write through using it, as well as telling the time, music and so much more.

we also use it as an extra to her home/school communication book as we load up photos and videos for her to show at school, which helps fill in the gaps in what she can tell school about what she has done at home.

Lots of dd's friends have ipods etc at 7 and 8 years old. Many had Nintendo ds's at 2 and 3 though.
We are considering a tablet when she is 9.

Ds1 is 8 and has asked for an ipod touch for Christmas. We are thinking we will get it for him but I need to work out how to control his internet access.

That's his first bit of technology - no ds's or tablets or laptops here yet.

My DD has an I pod she is 7. We have a family i pad so she doesn't have her own tablet

I think a tablet is a bit too young, but a regular kindle is great for reading. The paper light would be fab for travelling if overnight in particular

dd1 is 8 and has had an ipad for a couple of years now. it's not so much a 'toy' for her though, rather a necessity.

dd2 has fairly open access to my ipod touch and has had since she was 3 or so.

Not yet - DS (9). He has limited access to my IPAD, DH's Ipod Touch, Kindle & Iphone & more access to the PC. I reckon in another year or two for senior school, we might as well go straight onto his own PC since he does increasing amounts of HW on it. IMO, tablets are for gaming, reading and surfing and less suitable for work and we have enough gaming consoles/gadgets in the house. In addition to the above, we have the PSP 3, DS x 2 and a high spec PC (nerdy DH!).

DD got an Ipod touch aged 10 however DH and I both wish we had waited until she was older. She is almost 13 and saving for an Ipad, but I know it will cause issues when we want to restrict her usage.
DD would love a laptop, she tries to persuade us with saying it will be used for homework but she manages fine with the family PC.
I hate the idea of her going online in her room all the time, and it seems mean to get her one then say you can only use it downstairs.

All her friends (bar one) have Ipads, and most have had laptops from about 8 or 9, but then they are all on Facebook at midnight too.

DD1 had one, sadly there isn't an app to fix dyslexic typing.

ipod Touch 9 and 12
only Tablet is my fire, I've only had it a week. They can keep off.

However they have always helped themselves to my desktop computer.

DD2 could drive that from 3 and ended up with her own laptop at 7.
DD1 had in when she was 11 ish, So neither needs a tabet.

Neither do I this was a totally unexpected gift.

DD's are both teenagers now but had basic ipods when the nano first came out, so around 8-10 years old. Both have blackberrys and got ipod touchs in early teens. They don't seem that interested in tablets but both got laptops on starting secondary school which they use for media, watching films, tv (when they should be asleep or doing homework...)

A colleague told me the Ipad is great for stopping her kids fighting on long car journeys and if it had been around then I may well have bought one!

IPOD Touch for 9th birthday. Although I'm starting to think that a 7inch tablet might have been better.

No idea really what either thing is. DD is only 5 and a half though so maybe I've got all this to come.

Not yet (8 and almost 6 year olds). I did consider the Kindle Fire for DD1, but I just think she's a bit too young. I'd consider it at 9 or 10 if she really wanted one, I think. I have an ipad that we all use already and that's fine for now.

Was considering getting my ds1 one this year, he is 9. Would not get any younger though as they'd not look after it.

I would however consider the meep or kurio for my 7 year old, bt only because they are designed for children and come preloaded with no Internet access.
