When did you first take your newborn out?

My DS is 8 weeks old and so far I have avoided taking him out as he has not yet been immunised(due next week) due to the vast numbers of virus/flu etc about. Want to take DD to her dance class today & not sue if I should take DS with us or leave him with my parents. I'm worried he'll pick something up and won't be able to have his jabs next week.

How old was your newborn when you first started taking them out and about? Xx

8 weeks???

I came out of intensive care and would have loved to have stayed home but was doing pre school run!

How have you been getting your older daughter to school and ballet? And what about food shopping? Or seeing friends?

I was given advice to go out everyday. Even if just a walk around the block! Baby would be fine in a pushchair -not exactly close contact with anyone in just going for a walk.

I wish you well. Do ask hv etc for help (have you tried home start? They're fab. I found it very tough getting out and about but was lucky in a way to have things k needed to be out for.

15 hrs. He was born at 10 pm at home and I was in Asda with him at noon the next day. One of the Asda ladies asked how old he was and was a bit surprised I was out so soon. He was my 4th and I knew that by day 2/3i just wouldn't have the energy.

Day 2 or 3. I could hardly walk but it was in the middle of summer & I was desperate to get out after an awful pregnancy.

I am sorry to hear about the traffic jam...how frustrating!

Try going out again in a couple of days, maybe week day when older DC is in school and you don't have to worry about getting anywhere on time!!

Just for a bit of reassurance I didn't take my DCs out until after first jabs, DC1 has chronic disease and I had to be very careful or it would be another hospital stay. Big hugs

Well yes definitely keep him away from deliberate exposure! I'm a teacher, and I only took DD to see 'my kids' (lol) at 11 weeks. However, otherwise she's been out and about as normal.

Yes, she's has bronchiolitus (spelling?!) and two colds since being born but tbh, I don't think you can keep them cocooned forever! It's good to get babies out and about looking around, listening and generally just engaging in different environments. Sitting in looking at the same four walls can't be much fun for him either!

Dunno. Couple of days with both I think. Dc1 has a schedule I have to go out!

You poor thing - at least you gave it a go! Can you take them both somewhere nice tomorrow?

MrsW is there a SureStart centre near you? I've found mine to be fab, loads of support - they've even helped me srt out a tax credits mistake (seriously if I'd earned 120k last year i wouldn't be applying for wtc!!) just pop in for a timetable and pick an activity that appeals. For me it's the bf group and I've already made a couple of friends Shock dc 1 is 10 weeks bloody hv on the other hand is worse than useless

Well that was a disaster. Have spent last 2 hours stuck in traffic jam caused by a protest re: closure of local A&e. DD missed dance class & now stuck in same jam trying to get home. I feel like crying.

DS is still asleep but if he was ever going to catch DDs germs it would be after spending hours stuck in. VW Polo with her.

So, so sad and frustrated.

But gosh how on earth have you managed not to take him out for 8 weeks?! I am so envious Sad Mine is only 3 weeks old and has been on the school run every day since then. I hate it though. I hate strangers poking him in shops as well.

2 days in my dad's car as I was ill and needed to register him. Then about 5 days old as school began and had to get the older ones there. It was awful - people poking him and prodding him and I felt completely overwhelmed. They were trying to be nice but too too much at that stage.

I just wanted to stay at home with my lovely children for a month at least, and not be disturbed Sad

Err 2 days with dd and 4 with ds because everything was shut for Christmas. Had him out for a walk before that though.

2 days old. Went for a walk/shuffle ( had stitches) through the woods and to the local shop. I loved pram pushing. Kept me sane.

About 7 days old, but i'd been in hospital for 6 of them.
Getting out & about, just a walk or coffee with friends saved me.
Wrap up warm & enjoy the fresh air & i agree about mentioning your concerns to your GP/HV

Be kind to yourself Smile

Wow 8 weeks, you must be going crazy! I think I went out every single day from the day after getting home from hospital (by which time they were 8 days old).
I do remember being told off by a woman in starbucks for bringing such a tiny baby out of the house (DD was only 4lb when we left hospital) but doctors all told me it was fine.

The same day I was home from hospital, ds was a couple weeks early and we hadn't got the moses basket mattress!

2 days to my mum's so my gran could have a cuddle.

3 days for a walk and a coffee.

I was in from Saturday to Wednesday. I was climbing the walls by Tuesday desperate for some fresh air!

Day 4 dd got taken to nursery with ds, to be cooed over by all the staff and kids. I did have her in a sling for much of the first month which I felt would help protect her from their germs.

Sending mentioning anxiety over baby's health to the GP or an HV you trust. Though at least with ds I felt he seemed a lot bigger and able to deal with typical lurgy from about 3months, but anxiety was definitely the start of PND with dd.

Couple of weeks with Ds1. We went to France when DS2 was 6 weeks old (he was late - he should have been older! Grin) and less than 24 hrs with DD (took DSs to school the next day and took her to show her off)

But you have to do what you feel comfortable with.
