how much time child reads out loud for

Hi

We're abroad right now and unfortunately I haven't myself kept up to date on UK practices.

I have a 4 1/2 year old DS and 6 1/2 year old DD. Wanting to get an idea. How much time does your child spend reading out loud every night (books from school etc). Do the teachers/schools say 20 minutes every night or something like that??

And then how much time do you read to them then?

DS (8) reads to me for 30 minutes most nights. His school recommends 20 mins but he was a bit behind in English so i'm hoping the extra will enable him to catch up a bit

DD (6) reads most nights for about 15-20 mins just before she goes to bed, from a book of her choice which is in addition to her school book which we read when she gets in from school. So most days she will read for 25-30 mins in total.

DTs are 8.
The homework requirement is to read aloud for 15 minutes at least three times a week.

When they were learning to read, we would take turns reading a page each.

They are both fairly confident readers now, so I usually listen for ten minutes and then we spend five minutes chatting about the book.

These are some of the questions I ask:
(before reading): Can you tell me what has happened in the story so far?
(at the end of the chapter): Can you guess what's going to happen next?
Which is your favourite character? What do you like about them?
Where do you think this book is set? What clues does the writer give about the setting?

In addition to that, they read to themselves for half an hour to an hour every evening before they go to sleep.

I'm lucky if I can coax 2-4 pages out of my reception child.

I used to listen to yr1s reading (parent helper). I think 2-6 pages worth of each of their reading books was normal at home, going on what was written in reading records. In class I tried to give each one 5 minutes or so.

DS in yr4, his target is 20 minutes/day.

I mean 2-6 pages/every half week by the way, when talking about reading records, that's what the yr1s did at home. So 10-20 minutes/week typically. School has very average average results.
