We're delighted to announce the start of our children's book club, which means we're going to be highlighting a great children's book each month, offering you the chance to access free copies of the book, share your thoughts - and perhaps your children's - chat to authors and enter competitions.

This month we're kicking off with Francesca Simon's latest novel, The Sleeping Army. Click here to find out more information about the book and apply to receive a free copy. We'll announce on this thread when all the books have gone.

Francesca will be joining us later on Tuesday 29 May at 1pm for a live webchat to discuss The Sleeping Army as well as her other children's books. If you're unable to join us on 29th, do post your question or your children's questions in advance here.

Thank you! Dd1 is very excited. I think this should be right up her street - she has a bit of a Norse gods obsession, plus she loves Horrid Henry.

I have Lewis Chessmen King and Queen replicas sitting resplendent on a bookshelf, so the children have grown up asking about them. So thank you for the book - both DCs will enjoy - one to be read to and the other to be encouraged to read.... Think I might get more out of it that them Grin too!

OOOO I got one! I'm all excited now, I haven't won anything since I was about 6, when I guessed the number of peas in the jar and won a tasteful black glass fruit bowl! Grin

Doh! Can't seem to get to the page to get a freebie? Can anyone help? I'd love a copy.

What a lovely idea.

My 10 year old daughter loves reading so much she goes through a book a week (e.g. Percy Jackson, Charlie Bone) as well as listening to audio books. My youngest boy aged 8 goes through a book every week (e.g. Magic Tree house level) and my 13 year old son reads a book a month (mainly Manga and Eoin Colfer types).

They would all be up for writing reviews!! so I hope we get into the next round of books.

I always miss out on these things as I only check emails once a day generally in the evening :-( and only have a basic phone that doesn't do emails! I did happen to check emails twice today but still missed out. Being busy homeschooling two boys and having a 3 week old baby means I don't get to check emails more than that. Is there a way of sometimes doing a random draw for the book reviews? I have 2 very keen readers in the family and being homeschooled they LOVE doing book reviews too - it would be great if there was a way that there was a better chance of getting hold of one of the free copies of the book. (particularly as we have to fund all their other home-ed resources ourselves with no support from our local authority!). Many thanks x

Ditto Northernmoneky. My one and half year old loves books more than toys, so will be keeping an eye out here! hope there are enough for toddlers. Great idea :)

I think a childrens book club is a fab idea. Will the discussion be on at a time when the children can join in? My DD1 loves the idea of my book group and has set up a group with her friend. I'm sure she would love to be part of the Mumsnet one. I'm off to Amazon now to buy her a copy.

Book club looks great! Could you put a recommended reading age by the books? Also, will you just have one book a month or a book for each age range?

Is there a way of 'signing up' to this MN?

I did do a review of Itch by Simon Mayo that MN sent round - still too old for Ds (&) but I loved it and DS will definitely be reading when he's a bit older.

Hopezibah - well done for HEing your children :) We did that with DD last year, but eventually she decided she wanted to go to school. Are you signed up for the MN bookclub newsletter? I'd suggest perhaps doing that, if you haven't done so already, and then keeping a very close eye on dates/times of when the next book is announced. I missed out too - didn't notice the announcement of the new childrens' bookclub :(

DW has just finished reading The Secret Garden to DD (6) and I'm winding up The Silver Chair so we are awaiting the book's arrival with baited breath.
DS (11) is shocked to see that he has an assignment and reading prep (already) for Yr 7 Grammar School - so this will be a timely arrival to inspire him to read. I'm looking forward to reading it too!
