You've probably guessed that DD is not girly, but also not a tom-boy, and has exhausted the current X family library; She has done loads of Jacqueline Wilson, David Walliams, Enid Blyton, Spiderwick Chronicles etc. H Potter doesn't appeal, and she is not-so-girly that she wouldn't enjoy junior chick lit (possibly) but def no twilight/glee sorts. Anyone? Thanks

Has someone said Madeline L'Engle, Diana Wynne Jones and Joan Aiken? Oh, oh and Carries War (Nina Bawden).
More recent books: Morris Gleitzman Once Now and Then are brilliant and short. Bit sad though but beautifully handled. Lionboy trilogy and Halo by Zizou Corder also good. Ellen Renner Castle of Shadows/City of Thieves

There is a lot out there actually despite the pinkification

The Ingo series by Helen Dunmore
The Various by Steven Augarde (series called the Touchstone Trilogy)
The Seeing Stone by Kevin Crossley Holland (also a series)

My dd (10) has not read these yet, she is still on Jacqueline Wilson, but I loved them all. Blush

Swallows and Amazons is a totally non-girly book, but it's brilliant, especially for a 10 year old. Check it out on the link below - Beetroot Books has a great selection of positive children's books.

Do check the Book People to avoid too much of a hole in your pocket!
Michelle Paver Wolf Brother series? Also Gaiman and Funke. How about Mortal Engines books by Phillip Reeve? Steampunky sci fi with strong female characters. For funny check out Andy Stanton's Mr Gum (bit young but very funny...)
All the classics mentioned above of course...

I loved the Joan Aiken books - the ones featuring Dido Twite are brilliant, if you can get over any name-related sniggering. Also, the Wolves of Willoughby Chase by the same author.

The Philip Pullman books have excellent strong femaie characters, but double check, as some may be a bit too old for a 10-year-old.

Robert Westall? The Scarecrows, The Machine Gunners... more but Ican't remember

They are a little bit scary but I used to love them. Will also have very non-girly covers!

My DD was a reluctant reader before her Aunt & Unc bought her a Kindle for xmas. Since it is technology and not a stuffy old book, she has gone for it in a big way and best yet....The classic childrens books are free to download...RESULT!

I second Ali Sparkes - "Frozen in Time" is both exciting and funny - about two Enid Blyton-esque 1950s children in the 21st century. Another book that I have read recently is "Herm's Secret" by Kate O'Hearn - a very exciting story of whales and mermaids but not in the least bit wet or drippy (sorry about the bad joke!)

Would third Percy Jackson, Diana Wynne Jones and the Tiffany Aching book (though perhaps not I Shall Wear Midnight, which is pretty grim)

Yes, Yes to the Jill Books (I still read them too emsy).
Also the Trebizon series and the Ginny series (horsey but not too horsey)
Can't remember the author but I loved the "My Best Fiend" book and the sequels... by Sheila Douglas, I think?

I'm a bit disappointed that neither of my older dds has gone for Swallows and Amazons, my dds sail and camp enthusiastically, but they don't get the appeal. I haven't managed to get a Noel Streatfield fan either (Ballet shoes was my favourite book for years as a child, mainly for the wonderful Petrova).

They don't like Little women either.

Alan Garner - Elidor and others. Might be a bit dark - but I read them at about that age and loved them.

I'm a huge Cornelia Funke fan. Also love Gaiman...Stardust, Coraline and The Graveyard Book.

DD, 10, loved diary of a wimpy vampire. Was a good twist on the wimpy kid diary stories. She's also read Potter, Blyton, et al.

Actually the rest of TP would probably appeal too. They're rather 10 year old friendly, I am finding.

Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books - "The Wee Free Men", "A Hatful of Sky", "Wintersmith" and "I shall wear Midnight".

They're basically Discworld aimed at younger readers and are great.
