Childbirth

Is there anyone out there who DIDN'T tear with first delivery?

It seems almost inevitable that one has some sort of tear after delivery of first child (and often second or third-degree...). Is there anyone who avoided this (and had a vaginal birth!), and if so, any tips on how you thought you managed it? I know it's not the end of the world, but any tips for staying relatively in one piece would be gratefully received!

I didn't with mine.

They were both big 8.6 + 8.9 and I had almost non-existant 2nd stages. I was upright and they both kind of 'fell' out with the force of the contractions. No midwife present for either (one in hospital!) so no help there.

I put it down to the bottle of sweet almond oil I went through from 6months + Grin

Oh and I disagee about the earlier comment about episiotomies- I'd rather tear

I didn't tear, I just had a very tiny graze.

No tear with mine - just 'grazing' from some long fingernails.

No tear with all three of mine. All labours were quick. Listen to the midwife, thats the only advice I have.

I have had 3 births with no tears (just 'skid marks' as the registrar put it).

DD1 was induction with 2.5hrs pushing, ending in ventouse. I refused the episiotomy offered by the reg. so it was the first ventouse she had done with out cutting first.

DD2 was a home birth and out in 4 minutes, still no tears although she was my smallest at 7lb 6oz. A bit tender for a few days but absolutely fine really.

DD3 was supposed to be home birth but went in due to mec. in waters. I knew in advance she had a big head (was 37cm in the end) so didn't blast her out like DD2 and really took my time (only 17mins thoughGrin). I controlled the pushing with breathing and concentrating on steady pushing, the g&a mouth piece helped as I bit down on it while pushing. It worked and there was no tears to speak of so I gave up using the jug of warm water when weeing at 2 days post birth. She was 8lb 10oz as well.

I thoroughly recommend keeping a large plastic jug in the bathroom to fill with warm water when you want to wee. You start pouring the water over your bits just before you start weeing so it doesn't sting. Got to be warm water too, as if you use cold I found I couldn't weeConfused.

It's easier and much quicker than running a bath to wee in like some people suggest (who has time to run a bath every time they want to have a wee when they have a newborn?)

Wow, thanks very much, folks. I am hoping for a waterbirth (if the pool is free at the hospital), and have bought some wheatgerm oil so will try to start doing the perineal massage - I've been too busy/lazy so far (am just 34 weeks) so it may be a bit late but maybe still worth a try. I am not averse to the idea of drugs, hillee, in fact I suspect I may end up with an epidural (or at least trying to get one!) as I'm a giant wuss and have never really experienced serious pain, but am going to try to start in the water and see what happens. Good to hear some positive stories after more horror stories in the Guardian today - they seem to be specializing in them at the moment. (Hi, Amanda!)

Yes, I didn;t tear with either. Apparently I had a 'graze', I only knew about it because they told me, didn't really feel anything. Agree with others - just push when you're told, also they used water as lubricant.

Yes - me! mind you, I made up for it with DS2 Shock

Me neither. slight grazing with DS after a fairly quick first and only labour (3 1/2 hrs from water going and starting contractions properly to DS being born).

Had a lovely water birth and would recommend it. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that statistically less likely to tear in water.

Just to add on the other side I did tear and had 20 ish stitches after dd but they never really caused me any problem post birth. I didnt have to do any of that weeing while pouring warm water business and dont remember being not able to sit down (except in coffee shop on wooden chair 3 days post delivery.. that was a bit sore but more brusing that from stitches i think! Grin).

I was a keen horserider though and have since read somewhere that it gives you a perineum like old boot leather...! Like others say you cant really know pre birth and they usually arent the greatly feared thing we expect them to be!! good luck!

No tears or grazes with mine. Was a quick delivery and DD had her hand up against her face so I consider myself very lucky! Am due number two soon so hoping it is a similar birth!
Am glad to read about all these other ladies who have had tear-free experiences as I'm more worried this time!

Agree with the above , tearing is not inevitable & a good midwife, who knows her/his stuff, will assist you to not tear.

Have had 4 children, all fast labours, no tears.

I beleive regulary massaging your perineum during pregnancy with oil, to prepare it for the stretch does help.

I didn't but I'm not sure I can tell you why, just luck I suppose! Grin

I didn't tear with either. I oiled with the first using vitamin e oil, but did nothing for the second.

I'm either stretchy or bucket shaped I presume!

No tearing for me either. DD's hand was above her head and I had a tiny graze from a baby fingernail which stung for a day or two when I peed but that was it.

I had a homebirth with a great midwife and followed her instructions v. closely. I also spent lots of the labour but not birth in the pool and pushed her out while kneeling down.

I had 4 very quick labours (3hrs, 2 hrs, 45mins and 2.5hrs), all big babies (smallest 8lbs8oz, biggest 9lbs6oz) and on my first I had the tiniest tear (no stitches) which stung for a day or two when I had a wee, no tearing with the next two, and a small internal graze with no.4 (because I pushed her down the birth canal and out all in one go in one contraction). I think it is helpful to listen to the midwife, although with my fourth I was standing up in my living room whilst pushing her out, so wasn't much she could see anyway! Certainly with my others though, the midwives were helpful in telling me when to push and when to wait, and in supporting the perineum so the pushing was focused on the baby's head, not on the whole perineum... I do think that having had no pain relief with any of them (except for my 2nd, had some G&A) helped as I could feel while I was pushing and was able to do it slow and steady through the contraction so the head didn't just shoot out. Hope all goes well for you anyway!

no tears here. Both mine were born pretty quickly (4hrs start to finish) and no tears. Listen to your midwife and to your body. It's not a race.

Another one with no tears on first labour here. Had a quite quick labour (8 hours) and relatively small baby (6lb 14oz). Had a tiny graze but to be honest I don't think I'd have known if the midwife hadn't told me. I second doing what the midwife says - even though I was in a birthing unit and she was very hands off, the few bits of advice she gave me were invaluable. Please don't worry - whatever happens, it's worth it in the end! X

No tear with either DC.
I tried practice-stretching of the vagina beforehand (TMI Blush)and drank raspberry leaf tea (long before it was fashionable Grin). I also have what are called 'child bearing hips' - that probably helped!

As most of the abovet posters have said not everyone tears. My first was emergency caesarean, but second natural. The midwife gave me the choice whether to have an episiotomy or I would tear. The episiotomy wasn't wonderful as I needed lots of stitches after but apparently is a lot better than tearing naturally. I think they basically know by the time the baby is about to come out whether you will tear or not so then they give you the option of the episiotomy which by the way I didn't even feel! The stitches were also no problem and I think I am kind of ok down there now!!!

Just a little tear which didn't need a stitch but MW said sometimes they are worse. It opened up again several times before it healed. But I am convinced that fanny massage saved me from much worse.

Three completely different labours with different weight babies at different gestations and no tears.

Dc1 was facing my inner thigh and poor him ended up with a big bump on his head and dc3 was back to back.

I do think the best advice is to listen to the midwife and try to stay calm, but ultimately it it probably down to individual skin and a bit of luck.

I am a 'bather' as oppose to a 'showerer' though and one midwife said she thought that the long soaks in the bath may help!!

The worst bit after the birth was when they checked for tears, I could tell I hadn't and wasn't that keen on them going there!

Best of luck!
